Offering this scarce combination of mid-century American political ephemera and cooking, "The Congressional Club Cook Book" by the members of said club. Washington, DC: The Congressional Club/National Publishing Company, 1956, 4th Edition, Golden Anniversary Printing.…This specific volume is a rare variant of the popular 1955 mid-century release, as it features a unique, added Golden Anniversary dedication page at the front, with the printed signature of Club President Eloise E. Williams (Mrs. John J. Williams) for the 1957-1958 term. Plastic comb/spiral bound, pp. 427. Filled with recipes in the printed handwriting (with signatures) of the political spouses who submitted them. Notable recipes inside include those of First Lady Mamie Eisenhower (her famous Pumpkin Chiffon Pie), Pat Nixon, wife of then-VP Richard Nixon (California Date Nut Bread), and Lady Bird Johnson (Wheaties Coconut Cookies). SIGNATURE: This copy also features a genuine, hand-inked signature and inscription on the anniversary dedication page by U.S. Representative Albert David Baumhart Jr. (R-Ohio), who served in Congress from 1955 to 1961. The inscription reads: "Best wishes David Baumhart." This general greeting indicates the book was probably used by the Congressman as an official promotional gift or campaign keepsake for a supporter. POLITICAL CAMPAIGN: Another unique component is the internal 1950s campaign ledger on the back page. Hand-written in ink (not printed) on the final leaf is a local roster tracking prominent civic families and leaders from Representative Baumhart's home district base in Sandusky and Erie County, Ohio. The list includes these Erie County surnames: Graefe, Ohlenacher, Spohr, Clark, Gardner, Blair, and Roth. (The Graefe and Ohlenacher families were elite, multi-generational civic and medical leaders in mid-century Sandusky.) Other names and notes include "Gasser (mayor's wife)" and "Backley (Governor's sister)." Finally there is what appears to be a campaign numbers tally: "2 million, 5000" written under all the names, probably serving as fundraising/tally ledger from the mid-1950s Ohio campaign. Overall condition is Very Good. The plastic comb/spiral binding is completely intact. Covers are clean and square, no creases. The text block is clean, free of kitchen stains, and firmly attached to the spiral binding. Mild age-toning to pages, else clean and unmarked.
