Front free endpaper removed; modest personal hand-numbered bookplate of Tuscaloosa, Alabama banker James H. Fitts (James Harris Fitts, 1830-1912) on front pastedown; foxing/toning strongest on several early and late leaves with mostly light to mild interior occurrences with some stains and soiling; upper fore-edge chips to pages 493-495 but not affecting text. Text block remains firm. Book now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which aids in securing the aforementioned tenuous front board and modestly enhances the book's compromised shelf presence. Stray volume of the first posthumously gathered collection of Edgar Allan Poe's work with poems on pages 7-214 (leading off with "The Raven," and "Lenore" and concluding with "Eureka: A Prose Poem") and miscellaneous writings on pages 215-495. The first edition of this vanishingly scarce work.Original wraps are bound in.Part of Colman's dramatic library.'Tortesa the Usurer' is a romantic tragi-comedy, following a love triangle between a usurer, a young daughter of a Count, and a painter.Written in blank verse, this was a popular play for around a decade after its premier in Philadelphia, at the Walnut Street Theatre, on the 20th June 1839.Among this plays admirers was Edgar Allan Poe, who called it "by far the best play from the pen of an American author".Willis was a notable American author of the nineteenth century, writing both prose and poetry. He also worked as an editor, working with various eminent American figures of the day, including Edgar Allan Poe and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The Mirror Library was a periodical edited and published by Morris and Willis, beginning in the 1840s. They also published the New Mirror. This volume contains complete sections from different editions, but there is no publication information in any of the text material. There are 21 total stand-alone sections mostly of either 16 or 32 pages in length. The focus of nearly all "articles" centers on poetry and song/ballad lyrics: Irish Melodies, Lall Rookh, Gems of Scottish Song, Sacred Poems of Mrs. Hemans, Songs of Hebrew Melodies, Evenings in Greece, and more. One section, pp. 1-32, is followed by an "extra", continuous section, pp. 33-48, but it is from the New Mirror. The final three sections are Pencillings By the Way: Written During Some Years of Residence and Travel - Franch, Italy, Greece, Asia Minor, Turkey, and England (N.P.
