In this memoir, she claims that she played a role in the "stewardship" of his administration, while other historians have asserted that she took control of the Executive Branch of government. Edith married President Woodrow Wilson midway through his first term in office and, by the time of her husband's stroke in 1919, had assumed an active role in the presidency a role she describes in her memoir as "stewardship." Despite Edith's own modest description of her role, scholarly reappraisals of Wilson's second term have identified her as a driving force in many of Hoover's political decisions at the time. Her Memoir, then, recounts the experiences of an unusually active First Lady who often stepped outside of her role and into the Oval Office. Fine. Signed.
