In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. Early reprint ("Fifteenth Thousand" as stated upon title page; first published 1851). 370 pages. Hardcover: H 19.5cm x L 13.25cm. Contemporary brown cloth; several black ink stains to boards and slightly sunned spine; bumping and slight wear at spine ends and board corners. Strong toning to pastedowns;…three antiquarian ink inscriptions Port Gibson, Mississippi resident Samuel Briscoe, Esq. on front free endpaper with yet another on front flyleaf with those having some carry-through impressions onto successive title and Preface leaves; varied foxing (occasionally quite strong) throughout; several ink blots/stains obscuring some text on pages 119-120; top corners of pages 129-130 and 341-342 creased from past fold-down. Binding is firm. Preface by editor James Young who, as the title page notes, served as Grand Worthy Patriarch of the Grand Division of the Sons of Temperance in Kentucky. Features seventeen essays by various contributors including the renowned Dr. Daniel Drake of Cincinnati, and Methodist Episcopal Church theologian Reverend Thomas O. Summers. The book also has three notable Mississippi contributors: Reverend A.B. Longstreet of Oxford, twice president of University of Mississippi ("The Voice of Warning" - pages 41-60); Rev. William Winans of Woodville ("An O'er True Tale" - pages 113-118); and Rev. Philip P. Neely [Philip Phillips Neely] of Columbus ("Idella Pemberton, of the Prayer of Faith" - pages 291-298). As for the enthusiastic owner, a cemetery reference site notes a Samuel M. Briscoe (1849-1894) of Claiborne County, Mississippi and, although obviously only age 5 upon this book's publication, the penmanship and ink is certainly contemporary to 1850s-1870s.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. Step back in time to 1830s Salem, Massachusetts, a town still haunted by its infamous witch trials and now gripped by a fresh scandal: the brutal murder of wealthy Captain Joseph White. This book delves into the heart of this sensational case, exploring the intricate web of relationships…, dark secrets, and the pursuit of justice that captivated the nation. The author meticulously reconstructs the events leading up to the murder, introducing readers to the prominent families involved ââ â the Whites, the Knapps, and the Crowninshields. As suspicion falls upon several individuals, including Captain White's relatives and associates, a committee of vigilance is formed, determined to uncover the truth. The narrative unfolds with the intensity of a thriller, detailing the investigations, arrests, and subsequent trials that exposed a shocking conspiracy. The book offers a profound analysis of Webster's courtroom strategies, his masterful use of evidence and rhetoric, and the ethical controversies surrounding his pursuit of a conviction. Through a vivid portrayal of the characters, the social dynamics of Salem, and the intricacies of the legal proceedings, this book sheds light on a pivotal moment in American history. In den WarenkorbHardcover / Hardback. Zustand: Fine. First edition. Hardback. The story of a famous murder and of the trials of John Francis Knapp and of Joseph Jenkins Knapp. It is also the story of the part Daniel Webster played in those trials. His summation in one of the trials is thought by some to be the greatest ever delivered in America…. In 1830, brothers John Francis Knapp and Joseph Jenkins Knapp conspired to have their wealthy uncle, Captain Joseph White, murdered. They hired Richard Crowninshield to carry out the deed. On the night of 6 April 1830, Crowninshield slew Captain White in his sleep, while the brothers waited outside on the street, 300-feet away. The case was significant because it was the first time that accessories to murder had been tried, convicted, and executed. The eloquence of prosecutor Daniel Webster in defeating an old English common law that an accessory to murder could not be convicted without being present at the time of the murder brought the Knapp brothers to justice. Webster in his prosecution redefined the legality of being present during the murder by raising the issue '.to constitute a presence, it is sufficient if the accomplice is in a place, either where he may render aid to the perpetrator of the felony, or where the perpetrator supposes he may render aid. If they selected the place to afford assistance, whether it was well or ill chosen for that purpose is immaterial. The perpetrator would derive courage and confidence from the knowledge that his associate was in the place appointed.' The authors have attempted to present a more complete analysis of the case than had been published previously. A historian of Salem told them that the murder and the trials made a greater impression on the social history of the town than the witchcraft trials, which just 'passed along in the day's work.' Chapter headings include : Three Families in the Tragedy; The Murder and the Committee of Vigilance; The Knapps Have Two Visitors; 'There Is No Refuge from Confession but in Suicide'; Chief Justice Parker Explains the Law; Death of a Learned Judge - Enter Daniel Webster; First Trial of John Francis Knapp; Second Trial of John Francis Knapp; Webster Writes a Speech for Posterity; Comments on Webster's Oratory; Trial of Joseph Jenkins Knapp; The Two Trials of George Crowninshield; 'A Few Last Words in Conclusion'. Illus. + Maps, Books of Reference and Index. 236pp. lge. 8vo. h/back. From the library of true crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate, together with that of another previous owner, dw. not required. Nr. F.
