First hardcover edition, published by C.H. Peirce, 1851. Advice for young men on family life and religion. Chapter headings include; Intelligence an Element of a Successful Life, Energy an Element of Distinction, Industry The Highway To Success, Harmony of Character, Vice and Its Allurements, Courtship and Marriage. One of the more than 40 books written by Rev. Wise. 255 pages, 5" X 7". Dark green cloth covered boards. Title and a grape motif design on the spine panel in gold. Textured cover boards, with a Victorian style design on both the front and back panels. Some fading to the design and lettering on the spine though the design and title is entirely legible. No dust jacket, though it most likely was not issued with one. Some slight wear to the edges of the head and heel of the spine panel and tips of the corners. Boards have some slight rubbing wear, faint staining. Former owner's bookplate label on the front paste-down, about 3" X 1-1/2". But no further ownership marks besides that, and no writing on the text pages. Areas of age tanning to the text pages throughout the book. Spots of tanning to the edges of the text block. Sewn binding is entirely intact and tight. This copy is not a library discard. Attached are some photos of the copy we have in our inventory.

Complete in delicate original yellow wraps with the paper to the spine almost totally missing. Front and rear panels show some general soiling but all text is clear. Cover shows four children dancing around a Maypole and elaborate floral corners. Back cover identical. This is from the first children's series, My Uncle Toby's Library, issued in 12 volumes by Reverend Wise in 1853. At least four more series followed. Somehow he found time to hold various pastorates (Methodist) from 1837-52, edit the Sunday-School Messenger from 1838-44, and write several books. He edited the Zion's Herald from 1852-56, then took on the editorship of all Methodist Sunday School publications. In 1860 he also became editor of the church's tract publications, and held these positions until 1872. This volume is enchanting from cover to cover. The front EPs extol the Rollo Series and Chandler's Paper Dolls, while the rear EPs advertise the Good Little Pig's Library and Oliver Optic's Stories. The Arthur Ellerslie story might be encapsulated from p. 41, where we read, "Boys who do not strive to do right, but to please themselves, will always be growing worse and worse." 64 pp. of didactic moralisms.
