Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. Foreword by Pat Conroy. First printing. 8vo. xiii, 409 pp. Illustrated. Publisher's Advance Review Copy with material(s) laid in. Warmly INSCRIBED by Pat Conroy to Bill Starr: "To Bill Starr, Who lives by the word and keeps books alive in South Carolina. Beware of a (?) rising at the Citadel. Pat Conroy." Bill Starr, author and reviewer, has been at the very forefront for over three decades of advancing Southern Literature, first as Book Review Editor for The State in Columbia, SC for which he wrote hundreds of insightful, intelligent reviews for both emerging as well as established writers, and more recently as the Executive Director of Georgia Center for the Book in Decatur, GA. From Wikipedia on McKissick: "John McKissick (born September 25, 1926) is the football coach of Summerville High School in Summerville, South Carolina. In 2012, he became the first American football coach in history (High School, College or Professional) to win 600 career games. As of 2012, he hasn't missed a game in 61 years and is the longest serving high school football coach of all-time. He has led Summerville to 10 state championships. With 601 wins, McKissick holds the record for most wins by a football coach at any level." This is a tight, fine book in a bright, fine DJ. The very scarce first edition of this football autobiography, never to be reprinted in full. Especially uncommon in "as new" condition and with a wonderful association inscription by Pat Conroy.
