This book delineates the conditions that in the 13th and 14th centuries gave rise to the widespread creation of ethical and religious literature in the Judeo-Arabic language. The author draws on a wide range of literary and historical sources to explore the entwinement of texts and practices and the motivations of writers and readers alike. Through a close examination of the ethical writings of Ibn Gabirol, Solomon ibn Gabirol, Moses Maimonides, and Bahya ibn Paquda, the author locates them within the intellectual and spiritual movements of the time, including the rise of Sufism (Islamic mysticism) and the countervailing movement of fundamentalist pietism. This work follows the influence of these writings into the 14th century, when they were adapted and translated into Judeo-Spagnioli and Judezmo, influencing non-elite readers and stimulating new forms of literary production. This text will be of great interest to scholars of medieval Judeo-Arabic literature and Islamic, Jewish and Christian thought in the Middle Ages. Its exploration of the motivations and audiences that led to the creation of these texts will appeal to those interested in the sociology and history of reading and writing.
