Farquhar at the Tamalpais Press in September of 1962. On September 8, 1896, six San Francisco Bay Area residents and their packer and cook were arrested by an army patrol within the boundary of Yosemite National Park for unauthorized possession of firearms. The eight men were taken to army headquarters at Wawona and subsequently were ejected from the park by order of Acting Superintendent Young. Howard and other members of the expelled party filed a complaint against Colonel Young with the Interior Department. In his report to the Secretary of the Interior dated November 30, 1896, Acting Superintendent Young ably defended his action against the Howard party. Exhibiting both administrative firmness and forthrightness in public service, Colonel Young's action upheld the national park concept which placed the general welfare over the claims of individuals in the public domain.
