Hardcover. Zustand: New. Anand Narain Mulla is undeniably an important poet of Urdu. The book critiques his poetrywhilst appraising his works of prose. Mulla defies categorisation within which most Urdupoets are usually classified. He does not belong to the traditional poets who cling to poetictraditions that had their sway in the nineteenth century. Although many of his poemsthematically resonate the kind of poetry popularised by most of the progressives and theprominent critics have also counted him as a progressive poet, in his own estimation hedemurs to be exemplified as the poet having correlation with the Progressive WritersAssociation. Altogether, he has been a bitter critic of the type of poetry forked out by theostensible modern school. Mulla has been a class in himself who has written insightful poemsusing all forms and styles which are in existence in Urdu. So far as his ideological standpointis concerned he venerates all the salubrious, optimistic and positive values which are thecharacteristics of a humane society. The overriding theme in the poetry and prose of Mulla is humanism. In quite a few of hispoems, ghazals and essays, he openly scoffs at the divisive standards that are prescribed byalmost all religions. Instead he uphold humanity as the core value that alone can tie up all thehuman beings together and as a consequence dispense with almost all the tribulations thatexasperate our existence. Human values are cherished by almost all the Urdu poets but forMulla humanity is an article of faith on which he never compromises. The book encompassesa detailed analysis of Mulla s works of poetry and prose.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Indian plurality is unique in the world. No other country can boast of having so many races, religions, castes, cultures, languages and regional diversities within its boundaries as India can. This plurality while providing a very chequered and rich socio-cultural scenario, also impinges a few tensions that often lead to violent clashes. Since india is also the largest democracy of the world, its diversified society also has an effect on the elections right from the gram panchayat level to parliament. Though absolutely free and fair elections is more a theoretical concept than real because even in the UK and the US race, religion, sect or class do have some bearing on the electoral behaviour of the electorates, in the Indian context, the communities formed on account of caste (which is a typical Indian institution), religion, region, language, etc. play the overriding role in the outcome of elections. The book is the compilation of the research papers of the prominent social scientists who have dispassionately studied the electoral behaviour of the communities constituted on the bases of religion, caste and region. Additionally, there is a paper critiquing the role of media in the Indian election while two scholars propose necessary and practical reforms in the process of elections to make Indian democracy truly representative. The name of Faiz Ahmed Faiz does not remain confined only to the Indian subcontinent but he is also known in the Middle East, Central Asia, Europe and even in the U.S. No other Urdu poet with the exception of Ghalib and Iqbal can rival Faiz in terms of popularity. Despite being a committed Leftist, Faiz is known for his enchanting poetic style. He dreams about revolution as a lover dreams about his beloved. He, till date, remains the only Urdu poet whose name was considered for the Nobel Prize for Literature. Besides his poetic genius, Faiz was an exceptional man because of various facets of his personality. He was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. This volume What Ails Indian Muslims is a volume based on the historicist and humanist understanding of Islam and Muslims in India. It is a collection of scholarly essays penned by the finest scholars on Islam. Its point of departure is the theme that the colonial British state manufactured the thesis of the 'Hindu'/'Muslim' divide, which later got articulated as the production of imagined communities. This thesis of the production of imagined communities gets predicated on the market logic of the production of commodities. Communities, therefore, tragically get trapped as commodities for sale in the global market. Instead of this manufactured thesis, the volume talks of real history of Muslims in India. It claims that the pathetic condition of Muslims is because the post-independent Indian elites took over the colonial oppressive state mechanism and the colonial ideology of divide and rule. The volume claims that the solution to the problem afflicting Muslims is not to be found in the liberal bourgeois narrative of mere separation of religion and politics, but in a socialist and secularist problematic based on the historicization and humanization of both religion and politics.…
