Zustand: very good. Augustae Vindelicorum (Augsburg), sumptibus Ignatii Adami & Francisci Antonii Veith, 1758. ccxxiv, 606p. Contemporary half calf with raised bands; Title-page printed in red & black with printer's engraved vignette (by. J. E. Betling). With full page 2 engraved plates (specimens of ms. writings) and indices. 4to. 25x20 cm. Good copy. Collected sermons (treatises) of Zeno, bishop of Verona from 362 till 380, with extensive explanatory prefaces and commentaries. Biographical data on the author are scarce since he was not very well known in the old Church. Zeno had not been known as a writer before 1508, when two Dominicans, Albertus Castellanus and Jacobus de Leuco, edited at Venice 105 tractatus or sermons found in the episcopal library of Verona fifty years earlier. In 1739 the brothers Ballerini published "S. Zenonis episcopi Veronae sermones", with elaborate prolegomena and also discussing authenticity of the texts. This edition of 1758 includes a new appendix and also for the first time 2 works on Zeno by Francisco Bonacchi dated with separate titlepages 1740 and 1751 but paginated together here with the preceding texts. From these it appears that Zeno was a native of Africa, eighth Bishop of Verona (362-80), an able speaker, and an untiring champion of Christianity against the heathens and of orthodoxy against the Arians. He was well versed in literature and patristics and has a sophisticated style. His views are interesting for the history of liturgy and Mariology. Zeno was contemplating for the first time the virginity of Maria, supposing that the conception of Christ took place through the ear of Maria at the annunciation. The texts are also to be found in Migne Patrologiae cursus completus, etc. tom. 11. Slight browning and foxing throughout; shelf mark on title-page; small label cut out of first endpaper; binding worn and rubbed, corners bumped. Ceillier, Histoire générale des auteurs eeclésiastiques, VI, p. 271 vv; Hurter (1903) I, 362 Condition : very good copy. Keywords : CLASSICAL ANTIQUITY,
