Originalleinen. Zustand: Sehr gut. 277 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Very good and clean. - PREFACE -- variae of Cassiodorus have long been the subject of study by historians in their attempts to dispel at least a portion of the obscurity which still envelops the history of sixth-century Italy. For a period for which historical material is scanty this series of letters in twelve books, containing the official correspondence of the Gothic administration of Italy, cannot fall to be a source of the greatest importance. And yet the letters themselves are the despair of the historian as often perhaps as they are his hope, because they purposely leave so many things unsaid or say them obscurely. Certainly Cassiodorus could have given us a much clearer and more complete picture of the domestic and international politics of the Ostrogothic Kingdom of Italy. The historian finds an especial grievance in the formulary character of the letters, for Cassiodorus is writing more as a rhetorician than as an historian. Though he professes to perform both functions, we cannot but feel that his desire to produce a model for official correspondence often outweighed his other purpose of preserving a record of official action.
