Christa Jungnickel and Russell McCormmach's monumental two-volume history traces the emergence and development of theoretical physics in the German-speaking world from the opening of the nineteenth century through the rise of quantum theory and relativity. Rather than presenting physics solely as a sequence of discoveries, the authors integrate scientific ideas, mathematics, university institutions, laboratories, professional appointments, teaching, journals, and the social organization of research into a broad intellectual history. Volume 1, The Torch of Mathematics, 1800-1870, follows the establishment of physics in German universities and the increasing role of mathematics in physical theory, including the work of G. S. Ohm, Wilhelm Weber, Franz Neumann, Kirchhoff, Helmholtz, and others. The 1990 paperback edition comprises approximately 378 pages. Volume 2, The Now Mighty Theoretical Physics, 1870-1925, carries the history through the institutional establishment of theoretical physics, developments in electromagnetism and mechanics, Boltzmann and statistical physics, and ultimately the revolutionary work surrounding the quantum, relativity, atomic theory, and the emergence of modern theoretical physics. The 1990 paperback edition comprises approximately 456 pages. The work received the 1987 Pfizer Award of the History of Science Society and has remained an important scholarly study of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century physics. Condition: Very Good overall. Complete matched two-volume set in the original blue and red printed wrappers. Covers are bright and attractive with light rubbing, minor shelf wear, and small areas of edge and corner wear. Bindings appear firm and square. Page interiors shown are clean, bright, and free of significant annotation or highlighting. Text-block edges show some light handling soil and smudging, more noticeable on Volume 2. Each volume has a small black marker dot on the lower text-block edge, possibly remainder-style marks; clearly visible in photographs. No major creasing, tears, loose pages, or structural defects observed. Book set will be carefully packed and protected for shipment. USPS Media Mail available for domestic orders.
