This book is composed of two parts: an essay "On Fairy Tales" and a short story "Leaf by Niggle". Of the former, the dust jacket states "Mr. Tolkien rescues the fairy tale from the academic theorists on the one hand and the sentimentalists on the other." In his introductory note, Tolkien comments that these two essays "…were written in the same period (1938-39), when The Lord of the Rings was beginning to unroll itself and to unfold prospects of labour and exploration in yet unknown country as daunting to me as to the hobbits."
