Description The Magic Mirror: An Antique Optical Toy by McLoughlin Bros. is a fascinating reproduction of a nineteenth-century optical amusement that transforms distorted illustrations into recognizable images using a cylindrical reflecting mirror. Originally produced by the celebrated American toy and game publisher McLoughlin Brothers around 1900, this unusual novelty demonstrates the principles of anamorphic art and optical illusion. The book contains 24 full-color illustrations featuring whimsical subjects, including a ballet dancer, Puss-in-Boots, an elephant, Sancho Panza riding his donkey, and other imaginative scenes. When viewed through the specially constructed cylindrical mirror, the seemingly distorted illustrations become properly proportioned pictures. The book includes instructions explaining how to assemble and use the reflective cylinder. This 1979 Dover Publications edition is an unabridged reproduction of the original antique illustrations, based on material preserved in the Gold Collection of Toys at the Museum of the City of New York. An appealing collectible for enthusiasts of antique optical toys, Victorian amusements, nineteenth-century illustrations, optical illusions, anamorphic art, magic, and historical children's entertainment. Additional Notes The original unused flexible Mylar magic mirror is included and remains inside its protective envelope attached to the rear cover. This is an important feature, as the mirror is essential for viewing the optical transformations and may be missing from other surviving copies. This is the 1979 Dover reproduction, not the original circa 1900 McLoughlin Brothers publication. The book contains all 24 color plates and the accompanying instructions for constructing and using the magic mirror.…
