The book controversially places photographs of punks alongside images of Indigenous and non-Western peoples described in the publication using the period term "primitive peoples," drawing visual comparisons between punk adornment and ritual or cultural adornment. This framing reflects a distinctly 1970s Western perspective and is likely of interest today as much for what it reveals about the period's representation of other cultures as for its documentation of punk itself.
