Nine sections deal with (1) general bibliographies, statistical sources and atlases; (2) general works; (3) the physical environment; (4) historical patterns of growth and development; (5) economic structure and patterns; (6) transport; (7) social patterns and processes; (8) planning the metropolis and beyond; (9) environmental problems : conservation, pollution and control. An introduction to each section gives a brief account of its scope, the development of the subject, and the nature of its literature. The entries are arranged chronologically within each section, and each entry bears a descriptive annotation. An appendix lists libraries in London with substantial holdings on the London region.
