Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. So I just made a difficult decision. I purchased this book some years ago when it was in its original cellophane wrapping and I never removed it, that is until approximately five minutes ago. I could have chosen to leave it on and advertised the book as never opened, which had been the case. But I wouldn't have been able to say much about the book if I hadn't taken off the cellophane covering. So this is the definition of an unused book. It doesn't necessarily mean it's perfect because cellophane doesn't protect a book from the little bumps along its journey, and there is a thin little crease just off the bottom edge of the spine. However it does protect from soiling and the covers of this very large book are perfectly clean, as are the page edges. And it protects against rubbing: the cover edges and cover corners are free of any kind of rubbing. The edges do sport a few tiny dents, the result no doubt of little bumps. The silver lettering on the spine looks perfect, very bright. With books as heavy as this one (6+ pounds) you sometimes see a little space between the top edge of the spine and the textblock. That is not the case here. It is perfectly tight. The book is also quite square and the spine is straight. Having opened the book I can now say that the binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. An unopened book has another advantage: no one had the opportunity to create any soiling. The pages are perfectly clean. They are also nicely bright, no toning at all. The illustrated inside covers and end papers are also perfectly clean and free of wear. And there has been no opportunity to create any creasing, so there are a total of zero creases. Finally, you guessed it, there are no markings, no attachments, and nobody was able to write their name or anything else anywhere in the book. There are a good number of illustrations, the photographs are all in color, the drawings in black and white. The dust jacket is perfectly clean. It has only a tiny bit of wear, a little crinkle off the top edge of the front, just adjacent to the spine, and a little bit of the same crinkling off the spine's top edge, the result of a little bump. There are no tears on the jacket. Another benefit of removing the cellophane wrapping: I will be able to fit the jacket with a protective cover. I'll do that after I take the photographs in order to avoid the glare created by the protective cover. I should also mention that the flaps are very clean. There is a little crinkling at the front flap's bottom edge, again no tears, no tears on the flaps. Boxed securely we are looking at over 7 pounds, so probably too expensive to ship overseas. I will pick up the extra shipping cost for a domestic sale as my standard price of $4.95 is for a book less than a third the weight of this one. This book was originally published in Great Britain in 1989. It was 'First published in the United States in 1990 by Gallery Books, an imprint of W. H. Smith Publishers, Inc.' That is probably why there isn't a Number Line which is how Gallery Books typically identifies the printing, first, second, etc. I believe this is a First American Edition because there is no reference to a later printing, but I can't be certain. Having now taken the photos you may be wondering why the pictures don't capture the whole of the covers of the book. The reason is that my lousy phone camera changed the color from slate gray to blue. So I used the scanner for the photos of the book and the scanner's surface is too small. Also the two little scratches you see are on the scanner surface, not the book. Finally, I couldn't avoid a reflection of myself in the photo of the black rear cover of the jacket, and also at the bottom of the jacket's spine, photos two and three.
