An unapologetic champion of contemporary art, she curated well over 70 major exhibitions for the BMA, the high spots being notable stagings for Frank Stella, Brice Marden, Barnett Newman, and Bruce Nauman. She also curated the 1985 exhibition of the Cone Collection, the BMA's prized centerpiece, which contains over 3000 works, including 600 pieces by Matisse, as well as work by Picasso, Cezanne, Gauguin, and others. She has authored and contributed to dozens of books on contemporary art, and John Waters, one of the most significant thinkers in the world of contemporary art, considers Richardson to be his mentor. This monograph was prepared to accompany the exhibition at the Chicago Historical Society in 1977. Sharon Darling's work at the Society sparked or at least co-incided wi…th a revival of interest in the decorative arts work in Chicago around the turn of the twentieth century. She has also produced monographs on the ceramics of the period, notably Teco Pottery. This exhibition took an expansive view of the Chicago School, with the first works in the show being silverware from a number of firms like Sherwood & Whatley, Edwards & Company, and Speer & Cosper, active in the early nineteenth century. The exhibition had many highlights: Robert Jarvie's exquisite silver punch bowl and silver water pitcher of 1911; the many Kalo Shop Arts & Crafts designs, bronze andirons by Prairie School architect George G. Elmslie (executed by Jarvie), Falick Novick's 20th century copperwork, etc. Illustrated throughout in black & white with 155 works catalogued and photographed, many with small photos of the maker marks.
