The author recreates the 1939 season of the New York Yankees, a team that can make a strong claim to be the greatest in baseball history. 1939 itself was a pivotal season the Hall of Fame opened in Cooperstown that summer; a major league game was televised for the first time; night baseball came to the American League. And for the Yankees they won their fourth consecutive World Series and Joe DiMaggio had possibly his finest season. The year was not without sadness as in May Lou Gehrig took himself out of the lineup after 2130 consecutive games.

Kennedy's Inaugural Address. He is a member of the advisory board of the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship Program in Economics and Business Journalism at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Richard Tofel is the president of ProPublica, a non-profit investigative journalism organization in New York City. Derived from a Publishers Weekly review: It was in 1939 that the Yankees won their fourth straight World Series and eighth overall, cementing their position as the winningest team in baseball history. But 1939 was the year that Lou Gehrig's consecutive game-playing streak came to an end; as the star was diagnosed with ALS now known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Tofel follows the '39 season month by month, charting the hot streaks and slumps of individual players and the team, while also interweaving new developments regarding Gehrig. Tofel does a splendid job of capturing the different personalities of the '39 Yankees, a team that included such legendary players as a young Joe DiMaggio and catcher Bill Dickey and was coached by Joe McCarthy; all would be elected to the Hall of Fame.
