In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: New. The Adi Ganesh is the most sacred book of the Sikh. Literally meaning the 'First Book', it is also reverentially called the Granth Sahib and is regarded as the authoritative scriptural work. The compilation of the Adi Granth was done by the fifth Sikh guru, Arjan, in AD 1603 and contains, besides his own writings, the compositions of the four predecessors, the gurus, Nanak, Angad, Amardas and Ramdas. Subsequently, in AD 1705-6, additions were made to the Adi Granth by the tenth and the last guru, Gobind Singh, who incorporated the hymns of the ninth guru, Teg Bahadur and enjoined that after him the guru. In its final form, the Adi Granth contains the writings of the Sikh gurus, and also the banis of thirty-six Hindu and Muslim saints who lived between the twelfth and the seventeenth centuries. It is needless to emphasize the importance of this great religious work which sets forth the ideal of the union of the human Soul with its Maker. This can be attained by following, scrupulously the highest ethical standards and abjuring egoism without, however, renouncing the worldly activities. Besides its great religious importance, the Adi Granth is an invaluable work from the standpoint of the historian and the linguist. It provides very useful data about the social and religious conditions of India during early and late medieval times. For those interested in the development of the northern Indian languages and dialects, the Adi Granth is a veritable storehouse of information. Though the languages of the Adi Granth is mainly Punjabi, Hindi and cognate dialects it is interspersed with Sanskrit, Marathi, Persian and Arabic words. It thus throws considerable light on the problem of the ancient Prakrts and Apabhramsa and shows how the vernacular languages of northern India evolved out of them. In this arduous task of translating this voluminous and difficult work which took him seven years to complete, Dr. Trumpp was faced with many obstacles in the absence of any grammar or dictionaries. Besides consulting the granthis he also utilized the three available commentaries for completing the translation. The present volume will be of great use to the scholars as it contains, in addition to the translation of the Adi Granth, a short preface and five valuable introductory essays, the life of Baba Nanak, translated from the Janam Sakhi, a sketch on the lives of the Sikh gurus, an outline of the Sikh religion and a dissertation on the languages of the Adi Granth and the meters used in the Granth Dr. Trumpp has also included in original, as an appendix Japji or Japu-ji - the holiest portion of the Granth.

About The Author -: Ernest Trumpp (1828 Ð 1885) was a Christian missionary sponsored by the Ecclesiastical Mission Society. He was also German professor of Oriental Languages at the University of Munich and a philologist. With an intent to convert the populace of western un-divided India to Christianity, he was seconded and sent to the Sindh and Punjab region (British India). He first came to India in the 1850s and published scholarly work on the Sindhi and other western subcontinental languages. He also worked to translate the Sikh scriptures to help Christian missionaries to understand Sikhs and thereby aid their conversion. He authored the first Sindhi grammar entitled Sindhi Alphabet and Grammar. He also published Grammar of Pashto, or language of the Afghans, compared with the Iranian and North Indian idioms. This book delves into the life and teachings of Baba Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, through the lens of historical accounts known as Janam-sakhis. The author meticulously analyzes and compares various versions of these accounts, separating the likely facts from the embellishments that arose over time. Emerging from a period of religious and political upheaval in 15th-century India, Nanak's spiritual journey and revolutionary ideas challenged the existing social and religious order. He rejected the divisions between Hindus and Muslims, advocating for a path of devotion to a single God and emphasizing ethical living over ritualistic practices. Through detailed narratives and insightful interpretations, the book sheds light on Nanak's early life, his transformative experiences, and his subsequent travels as a wandering preacher. It explores his encounters with various religious figures and the impact of his teachings on the communities he touched. Ultimately, this book offers a nuanced and captivating portrait of a pivotal figure in religious history, revealing the enduring significance of Nanak's message of unity, equality, and spiritual enlightenment. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In den WarenkorbFirst and only contemporary edition of the first translation of any portion of the Sikh holy texts into another language; fairly prevalent institutionally but uncommon on the market with no copy traced at auction. Trumpp's work remains the subject of controversy. A refugee from the Revolution of 1848 Trumpp was employed as assistant librarian at East India House. In 1854, he travelled to India at the behest of the Ecclesiastical Mission Society to work on language text books and glossaries for mission work, a rôle characterised by Mandair as "Indologist-cum-missionary" (p. 255). At the recommendation of Robert Needham Cust, a British administrator in the Punjab and devout evangelical, in 1869 Trumpp was commissioned by the India Office to produce a translation and basing himself in Lahore began work. It is unfortunate that Trumpp seems to have lacked any sensitivity to the nuances of Sikhism, having decided early that it was "a waning religion, that will soon belong to history". He took little care to understand it in its own terms, rather imposing his own "theological" structure, and despite the immediate "vociferous rejection of the work by Sikhs" his work does seem to have exercised a lasting influence over subsequent works of translation and interpretation (p.253). However, his influence has not been solely malign: the records he published of his discussions with the granthis at the Golden Temple are an invaluable resource; his decision to publish the Puratan Janam Sakhi made known the earliest recorded biography of Guru Nanak; and more generally, the publication opened up the field to debate among both Sikhs and non-Sikhs, perhaps not least inspiring Max Arthur Macauliffe's rejoinder, The Sikh Religion (1909), "one of the main objects" of which was "to endeavour to make some reparation to the Sikhs for the insults which Trumpp offered to their Gurus and their religion". The complex press work for the book was undertaken by Stephen Austin and Sons of Hertford, founded in 1768 their connection with the East India Company dated back to the printing of Persian examination papers for the East India College in 1842. Subsequently the company became one of Britain's leading printers in Oriental languages, and in 1909 took a member of the Harrison family, of Harrison & Co. the renowned government security printers, onto the board, combining the interests of the two companies. Stephen Austin continue to work in the same areas to the present day. Arvind-Pal S. Mandair, "'The Emergence of Modern 'Sikh Theology': Reassessing the Passage of Ideas from Trumpp to Bhai V r Singh", Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies, 68, 2, 2005. Quarto (268 x 183 mm). pp. xii cxxxviii, 715. Text in English and Gurmukhi. Early 20th-century moderate yellowish brown buckram, gilt lettered on the spine, edges lightly sprinkled moderate red. Ex-?private library, small circular paper press-mark label to tail of spine, ink and pencil accession marking verso of title, no stamps, no bookplate, lightly rubbed, scuff to spine; old paper repair to verso of half-title, pale toning to contents which are marginally a touch brittle in places with one or two short closed splits; overall a well-preserved copy, very good.
