Hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. 161pp. 1907. First edition. 8vo. sized. A good (or good plus) only copy of this edition with super colour illustrative plates. A colour frontispiece of Alice (with guard) and twelve other coloured plates all as called for. Original publisher's khaki cloth stamped in black to the spine and to the front board. Unfortunately the front endpaper has been pasted down to the front paste-down. It could probably be freed up with some professional attention, though I can't see what is under it. Light rubbing to the verso (now in effect the paste-down) upper corner of the front endpaper where a former neat gift inscription has been fairly neatly excised/rubbed out. No other visible inscriptions. There is rubbing - possibly caused by exposure to damp running down the length of the front board with some loss of text and image. Scattered light spotting. A little finger soiling to a few pages between 70 and 75. A 5mm circulat stain/soil mark to page 130 with a ghost mark to the corresponding page. An old paper repair to the lower corner of page 12. Not perfect, but still an attractive first Rackham edition copy.

Hard Cover. Zustand: Good. Rackham, Arthur (illustrator). First Edition. No date; circa 1907. Stated at copyright: "Printed in England" without any other printing details. Deep red full-cloth boards, Rackham pictorial plate: "The Mock Turtle drew a long breath and said, 'That's very curious'", white cover titles and border, some shelf wear, discoloration, spine rub. Thick heavy stock leaves generally very good; no writing. Frontispiece plate of "Alice." Bind good, intact. Includes thirteen richly colored plates by Arthur Rackham and fifteen full-page b&w illustrations. Also, decorative headers, tail-pieces, partial-page imagery throughout. A near good first edition with near very good interior. Recognized as one of the great pairings of an inimitable illustrator and the imagination of a remarkable storyteller, this work became an extremely influential edition with the marvelous color plates and drawings by Arthur Rackham, showing both a dark side and a sensitivity to the fantasy and "wonder" in the story. This work was among the first to offer a trade edition and a limited edition signed by the artist that brought special attention to the quality of the art printed for the edition. Lewis Carroll's classic begins on a boring summer afternoon when the bright and inquisitive Alice follows a white rabbit down a rabbit-hole. At the bottom, she finds herself immersed in a bizarre world full of strange creatures and bizarre goings-on. She tries pills and potions, and attends a very strange tea party and croquet match. An immensely witty mix of satire, puzzles, and drama, this is one of literature's most astute depictions of the experience of childhood. 162 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall.

IF YOU DO NOT CHOOSE PRIORITY MAIL YOU ORDER WILL BE REFUSED AND I WILL NOT TRADE WITH YOU AGAIN. *** This is a UK first edition hardcover published by William Heinemann in 1907. The photos show the condition better than I can describe, however overall I am grading as Very Good for its age, heading towards Near Fine. The book has a straight spine, sharp corners and firm spine ends, with a lightly sunned spine. The gilt illustration on the front cover is intact and not rubbed and the text on the boards is likewise complete. There is the inevitable page toning to the edges but the interior of the book is clean, aside from the odd fox spot. There is an owner inscription dated 1908 to the front end paper, which promotes Rip Van Winkle on the reverse at 15s net. The title page states there is also a "proem by Austin Dobson" and confirms the publisher as William Heinemann. There is no mention of a publication date anywhere but research confirms this to be 1907. the book has numerous black and white illustrations throughout and has the 13 original colour drawings.

Original buckram. Zustand: Very Good. Arthur Rackham (illustrator). first Rackham edition. DELUXE LIMITED EDITION in exceedingly rare original slipcase. WITH: RACKHAM INK DRAWING of the Gryphon. The book: "Rackham embarked on his new edition of Alice in Wonderland, with illustrations to rival John Tenniel's, when the book came out of copyright in 1907. Rackham's advantage over Tenniel was that now he could introduce colour; also his pen line would not be reproduced by wood-engraving. This gave him some new freedoms for invention, but his amendments to the ingrained image of Alice were not only technical. Rackham's Alice was very much a fleshly Edwardian child who would question the status quo of Wonderland. Her courtesy carried an undercurrent of insistent argument. A contemporary critic observed 'a tender, flickering light of imagination in [Alice's] eyes' (Daily Telegraph, 27 Nov 1907). (Dictionary of National Biography). This deluxe limited edition is number 1030 of 1130 copies, unsigned as issued. (Rackham was out of the country when the book was published and did not sign the edition.) Complete with thirteen large tipped-in color plates and many black and white drawings. In the exceedingly rare original "windowed" slipcase: We can only find records of very few references to the original slipcase, although numerous copies exhibit the patch of rectangular discoloration corresponding to the cut-out opening of the slipcase, designed to display the gilt title and the gilt cover illustrations of the turtle and gryphon. The drawing: Laid-in is a large pen and ink drawing of the gryphon, signed by Rackham ("ARackham") and dated ("07") the same year as the book. The drawing is similar to the one on page 119 of the text, but is larger and with much more detail. Size: sheet = 7 1/4x9 (184x228 mm); image = approx. 5 1/2x7 in (136x180 mm). London and New York: William Heinemann and Doubleday, Page, & Co., 1907.Quarto, original white buckram gilt, original marbled slipcase with morocco edges and cutout displaying the title and illustrations on the front panel. Drawing laid-in. Book with mild rectangular "ghosting" from where the cloth was exposed when in the slipcase; mild toning to spine and a few stray spots but cloth exceptionally clean and bright. Corners a little bumped. Slipcase with general rubbing to marbled paper and chips around the frame of the cutout. Matte for one plate with small abrasions at gutter. Text and plates nearly pristine. Drawing was previously framed, resulting in toning to paper where it was exposed (ink crisp and fine). A beautiful copy of a Rackham classic, complete with the very rare slipcase and a unique Rackham ink drawing.
