On one side, charges have been made that the Rooseveltian program is doing violence to the Constitution and, as a result, the American system of government is in danger. From the other side, assurances have repeatedly been given that all that has taken place and all that is being done is within the Constitution and in accord with the American tradition. To the average American citizen this is very puzzling. Is the Constitution really being violated or is it merely being used as a political football? To enable each person to formulate an answer to this question is the purpose of this book. Believing that there is a general lack of knowledge concerning the Constitution of the United States and an even greater lack of information in regard to fundamental Constitutional principles, the authors have attempted to set forth the basic features of the American constitutional system. In so doing, illustrations have been freely borrowed from the New Deal. After all, it is the New Deal which the people must judge.
