Indeed, the best-known American apprentice, Benjamin Franklin, initiated his career by running away from his apprenticeship. The Civil War and its aftermath finally destroyed the system. The author "draws on an intriguing collection of working-class accounts, gleaned from letters, diaries and memoirs to present a unique view of the craftsman's world as seen through the eyes of the apprentice" (jacket).
