Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. First Edition. the jacket, now protected, is price clipped. It suffers from minor loss at the head of the spine; is chipped at the edges and has a small hole towards the tail, above the author's name. The front flap has left a shadowy imprint on the front end paper. Despite its faults, it remains a very nice copy. "Exmoor, where the action of this book is represented as occurring, is, thank heaven, a real place, inhabited by living men and women. It should therefore be made clear beyond the possibility of doubt that the localities and characters here depicted are purely imaginary and bear no relation whatever to any existing place or person." (Cyril Hare).

Francis Pettigrew travels to Exmoor for a holiday with his wife - an area in which as a young boy he was traumatised by coming across a dead body on the moor. In an attempt to exorcise this trauma, Pettigrew walks across the moor to the place where the incident occurred - only to find another dead body. Moreover when he returns to the scene with the police, the body is gone. Did he really see a body - or is it a hallucination conjured up by his return to the scene of the crime that has haunted him since childhood? In "Untimely Death", Cyril Hare conjures up an intriguing puzzle whose twists and turns will keep the reader turning the pages until the final surprising resolution. E-375; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

"This book was published in 1958, well after the real "Golden Age of Mystery," but apart from a few mundane details it could just as easily have been set in 1938. It is a skilfully-crafted good, old-fashioned murder mystery" (GoodReads). Photographs/sans available upon request.
