"Der Roman"Feso" hat für die Literatur Zimbabwes besondere Bedeutung: Er ist das erste Werk, das in Zezuru, dem wichtigsten Shona-Dialekt, geschrieben wurde. Nachdem der Roman vom rhodesischen Erziehungsministerium zur Pflichtlektüre für Zezuru-Studenten erklärt worden war, wurde er von den Nationalisten Zimbabwes wegen seiner beißenden Kritik an den Zuständen im Land heftig angegriffen und später auch offiziell verboten. "Feso" erzählt im Gewand einer Sage, eines fiktiven historischen Romans, der im 17. Jahrhundert spielt, die abenteuerliche Geschichte einer Brautwerbung. Während Pfumojena, ein grausamer Despot, sein Volk, die Vanyai, mit Gewalt beherrscht, führen die Vahota unter ihrem König Nyan'ombe ein friedliches Leben. Pfumojena hat eine wunderschöne Tochter, die er im goldenen Käfig aufwachsen läßt; wer sich ihr zu nähern versucht, wird hart bestraft. Da beschließt Nyan'ombe, sich eine Frau zu suchen. Seine Wahl fällt auf Chipo, die Tochter Pfumojenas. Der Feldherr Feso erhält den Auftrag, Chipo zu rauben. Es gelingt Feso, sich am Hof Pfumojenas einzuschleichen, doch er wird gefangengenommen und zum Sklaven gemacht. Nach einem Jahr begegnet er Chipo durch einen Zufall und übermittelt ihr die Brautwerbung seines Königs. Chipo ist glücklich, der Gefangenschaft im eigenen Haus endlich entrinnen zu können und willigt ein, sich durch eine List entführen zu lassen. Die Flucht gelingt, und Feso wird bei seiner Heimkehr als Held gefeiert, aber die Vanyai üben furchtbare Rache. Sie überfallen die Vahota, richten ein schreckliches Blutbad unter ihnen an und holen Chipo zurück. Als die Vanyai das alljährliche Fest zu Ehren Chipos feiern, werden sie jedoch von den Kriegern Nyan'ombes überrascht und vernichtend geschlagen. Nyan'ombe erweist sich nun als großer Staatsmann, in dem er seinen militärischen Sieg nicht auskostet, sondern die ehemaligen Feinde mit seinem eigenen Volk zu einer neuen Nation vereinigt.
