Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. This copy of "Flowers of Piety: Devotions and Prayers Compiled from Approved Sources," a personal prayer book officially sanctioned by the Catholic Church, and published for perhaps 50 years over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, is unlike any on the market today. It is unusual in that it is in sterling condition and perhaps has never been read. It was likely kept in the accompanying box, which is itself in very good condition, with an intact hinge and undamaged red silk padded lining. At 2 1/8" by 3 ¼", our book is not quite a miniature, but comes extremely close. It is bound in padded dark brown imitation leather, with the simple word "Flowers" stamped in cursive gold on the spine. Elaborate gold stamping also decorates the foldover where the imitation leather seals the endpapers on the inside covers. (Actually, those endpapers appear to be watered silk, or an imitation of watered silk, instead of paper.) The front cover has no title but is more elaborate in decoration. The top quarter of the cover is separated from the rest of the cover by a diagonal divider that gives the impression of a stamped, patterned patent leather ribbon. A stamped gold filigree cross is in the lower section. The smaller top section is filled with fourteen stamped gold stars of different sizes. The pages are in impeccable condition and are edged in exceptionally bright gilding. There is a bound-in bookmark in the form of a small gold cord ending in a red tassel. The book has only a few illustrations-there is a print of the Sacred Heart of Jesus serving as a frontis piece and there are some decorated initials and a few small decorations at the ends of sections, all in black and white, but otherwise it is plain copy. This edition of "Flowers of Piety" appears to have been released around the turn of the twentieth century. "Appears" is the operative word because there is no official copyright date in our copy, and other editions date 1874 to 1922. This book was published in multiple bindings and in multiple countries, and perhaps in multiple languages, by an assortment of publishers. Our copy was published by John Baptist Steinbrenner, who had offices in London, New York, and Winterberg, Germany-it would make sense that this copy came out of New York, but there is a note on the reverse of the title page that says, "Printed by J. Steinbrenner Witenberg." As was usual with all the editions of this book, there is no copyright date or author, but there are two "imprimaturs" towards the front, giving it the official stamp of approval from the Catholic Church: One is from the Archbishop of New York in 1899, the other from the Bishop of the Diocese of ?eské Bud?jovice in what is now the Czech Republic, in 1901. Together, these should give an idea of when this item was published. It is truly a rare find for collectors of religious and devotional literature and even for collectors of miniatures.
