The Technicolor Paramount Picture -- Dudley Nichols screenplay from Ernest Hemingway's novel -- starred Gary Cooper, Akim Tamiroff, and the aforementioned Swedish beauty. (We list this as a "soundtrack" album for ease of categorization, though in fact what we have here is Warner Bros. Pictures musical director Ray Heindorf "recording a motion picture score of his choosing" circa 1958 -- that being the score for the 1943 film 'For whom The Bell Tolls,' a masterwork of his close friend, the late Victor Young.") One presumes there was some kind of orchestra in the studio with Mr. Heindorf (we doubt he here performs the entire score on a kazoo), though none is actually credited. Reduced from $14.

Medina (1888-1990) first achieved notoriety as the presiding judge in the Smith Act anti-Communist prosecutions of 1949 and was elevated to the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 1951. In this lecture he calls for four reforms to the N.Y. State court system: reorganization, so as to eliminate autonomous courts and overlapping jurisdictions and provide an overall administrative structure; elimination of political patronage in the hiring of support personnel; procedural reform, by transferring rule-making power from the legislature to the courts themselves; and appointment rather than election of judges. All but the last recommendation have been largely implemented. Very good.
