This is another paragraph Book Description: Since his release from prison in 1990, Nelson Mandela has emerged as the world's most potent moral leader since Gandhi. The foster son of a Tembu chief, Mandela grew up straddling two worlds: the traditional culture of his tribe and the hostile reality of a white-dominated nation-state. His pivotal role in the anti-apartheid movement led to a life underground and imprisonment for his political beliefs and activities. A triumphant sequence of events then followed which climaxed in April 1994, with the appointment of Mandela not only as the first-ever black South African president, but as the first man to govern a democratic, multi-racial South African society. This work is Mandela's own account of his and his country's epic journey. Abridged and illuminated with dramatic photographs, this new edition chronicles the man, his land and his people.

Signed limited first edition of the illustrated autobiography of one of the greatest moral leaders of the twentieth century. Quarto, original cloth, illustrated. Signed by Nelson Mandela. Fine in the original slipcase and original box. An exceptional example. "The Nelson Mandela who emerges from his memoir is considerably more human than the icon of legend Mandela is, on the evidence of his amazing life, neither a messiah nor a moralist nor really a revolutionary but a pragmatist to the core, a shrewd balancer of honor and interests. He is, to use a word unhappily fallen into disrepute, a politician, though one distinguished from lesser practitioners of his calling mainly by his unwavering faith in his ultimate objective, ending white minority rule" (New York Times).

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. First edition thus. Large quarto. A chance to own a magnificent association copy of the illustrated version of Mandela's autobiography, which includes a delightful tribute to his friend - the late Theodore 'Teddy' Forstmann - written in Mandela's hand on its title page: 'Best wishes to a highly motivated public figure. As long as there are men and women like you the heavens will never collapse on us.' Teddy Forstmann (February 1940 - November 2011) was a colourful character and one of America's richest men, a billionaire with far-reaching contacts who counted - as well as Nelson Mandela - such figures as Princess Diana, Bill Clinton and Mark Zuckerburg among his many celebrity friends. But 'his most lasting legacy will be the hundreds of millions of dollars he donated to charitable causes' (The Guardian), and there is no doubt that Forstmann was a committed philanthropist. The Nelson Mandela Children's Fund was one of the numerous charities that benefitted from his philosophy, as he served as a trustee and donated at least $1m to the cause. The book itself is in fine condition throughout and is now housed in a beautiful, custom-made clamshell box, with velvet lining and 1/4 morocco and gilt lettering. This is a unique item, and - albeit in our biased opinion! - one of the most exciting Mandela books on the market. Please note: we have been dealing with carefully sourced Mandela items for well over a decade and we guarantee that all our stock is authentic. Inscribed by Author(s).
