Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. The paintings assembled here reveal that for a surprisingly large number of gifted Australian artists, the relationship between art and religion provides a continuing creative challenge. Most of the works, with the exception of the Aboriginal group, draw on the Judaic or Christian traditions which allows us to locate them in a context of great antiquity. The inclusion of a group of Aboriginal paintings does not simply ensure a comprehensive representation of Australian art. The context for these religious images is significantly different. They reflect a culture which is permeated with the power of the sacred, and in which art is not so much a personal comment as a means of presenting to the initiated certain hidden mysteries. But they also express a state of transition from shared celebration to the open market place, where works of art compete for attention on an individual basis.

Sydney : Bay Books, 1988. Quarto, boards in dustjacket (with illustration of Arthur Boyd), light handling wear, pp. 204, illustrated. Aboriginal art text by Judith Ryan. "Part 1 of the book covers images in religion - paintings with explicit religious reference, images that have their origin in religion, even though the artist may in fact be protesting against institutionalized religion. Part 2 covers three 'islands of reflection' - one for Arthur Boyd, one for Leonard French, and one for Aboriginal painters." - from the introduction. Presentation copy for the art curator Daniel Thomas, with a lengthy, personal signed inscription from Rosemary Crumlin. From the library of art curator and author David Thomas, former Keeper of Pictorial Collections, National Library of Australia, and Director of the Newcastle City Art Gallery, Australian Gallery Directors Council, Art Gallery of South Australia, Carrick Hill, Adelaide, and Bendigo Art Gallery.
