Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Tuscaloosa (Choctaw for black warrior ) is one of the oldest cities in West Alabama. It shares its name with a chief who fought Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto in 1540 and a river that stretches from the Appalachian foothills in the north-central region to the floodplain and lowlands of the south. Called The Druid City since the 1800s, when large water oaks lined its main streets, Tuscaloosa remains a center of industry, commerce, health care, education, and cultural life, with the university being its dominant source. The former capital (from 1826 to 1846) is affiliated with the Alabama Crimson Tide, catfish, Dreamland, the Black Warrior River, a strong folk and craft tradition, and Gov. George Wallace s 1963 stand at the schoolhouse door.…

The river, the road, the rails, and the ribbon of canal these four parallel transportation arteries define the historic corridor that is the Delaware River Scenic Byway. Paperback. Zustand: Good. In 1866, Florence rose on the banks of the Gila River in south central Arizona. People came from near and far to this early settlement in the Arizona Territory, joining the Native Americans and Mexicanfarmers already established there. The town boomed with the discovery of a silver mine nearby. Politicians and lawyers followed when Florencebecame the seat of Pinal County in 1875, and when the Territorial Prison arrived in 1909, the community s future no longer depended upon the fickle mining business. World War I brought a prisoner-ofwar camp, and popular youth rodeos added to Florence s remarkable character and history. In the 1970s, citizens began a model effort to preserve their community s legacy and remaining historic structures. The major growth that early Florence anticipated is finally occurring all around the town, bringing change once again.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Zellwood was named for Thomas Ellwood Zell, who arrived in the area in 1876. Zell sent scrapbooks displaying newspaper clippings to entice Northern friends former Civil War officers to settle near Lakes Maggiore and Minore. Word spread that Zellwood was a desirable place to winter and do business. Construction of millionaire steel magnate James Laughlin Jr. s mansion began in 1885. Zellwood attracted people who built estates and new homes. Boardinghouses popped up. The Holly Arms Hotel and Zellwood Inn housed farmers, teachers, and entrepreneurs. In 1911, a train brought more settlers planning to earn their livelihood from Zellwood s rich earth. Agriculture dominated from the 1940s through the late 1990s. Zellwood was known for sweet corn. By 1999, all but one farm had been purchased for Lake Apopka restoration. Only Long and Scott Farms carries on the tradition of growing Zellwood sweet corn by farming the sandy soil bordering the muck lands of Lake Apopka.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Football is one of Auburn's oldest and most beloved institutions. Formally established as a varsity sport by Dr. George Petrie in 1891, Auburn's football team has proudly represented the school for over a century. The team shares some of the South's oldest college football rivalries with the University of Georgia and the University of Alabama-a rivalry tested annually in the Iron Bowl. Throughout their history, the Tigers have earned the honor of SEC Champions and a national championship and have been featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated; the team has produced many professional players and Hall of Fame inductees. Auburn football also boasts a very dedicated legion of fans, who love to cheer on their Tigers, both at home and away. Paperback. Zustand: Good. Scotsman Samuel Campbell's paper mill-on-the-burn and the Native American-named short hills were the origins of the area known today as Millburn and Short Hills. Millburn Township is recognized throughout the country for its natural beauty, ambiance, and fine schools. After the Revolutionary War, the locale changed from a rural area of farms to one dominated by paper and felt mills. With the development of the railroad community of Wyoming in the 1870s, the town again changed course. Soon thereafter, Stewart Hartshorn, inventor of the spring window shade, chose the town for his planned ideal community, from which it evolved into the premier suburb it is today.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. On Saturday, September 23, 1905, fifteen determined runners bolted at the sound of the starter's gun to begin an amazing journey of distance and endurance: the first Chicago Marathon. Huge crowds witnessed a thrilling race that had it all: action, disaster, suspense, a fallen favorite, and a cliff-hanger ending. It was epic, defining a new chapter in Chicago's athletic history. More than a century later, each year Chicago welcomes nearly 40,000 inspiring runners-from the world's best to complete novices-who will start, discover, battle, and ultimately finish something they once thought impossible, even ridiculous: the Chicago Marathon, all 26 miles, 385 yards. This book takes the reader into the marathon experience, including the sights, sounds, emotions, challenges, and achievements.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. A balanced yet biting critique . . . Gitlin is a savvy guide to our increasingly kinetic times.--San Francisco Chronicle In this original look at our electronically glutted, speed-addicted world, Todd Gitlin evokes a reality of relentless sensation, instant transition, and nonstop stimulus, which he argues is anything but progress. He shows how all media, all the time fuels celebrity worship, paranoia, and irony, and how attempts to ward off the onrush become occasion for yet more media. Far from bringing about a new information age, Gitlin argues, the digital torrent has fostered a society of disposable emotions and casual commitments, and threatens to make democracy a sideshow. In a new afterword, Gitlin takes measure of the most recent wave of inundation in the form of iPods, blogs, and YouTube. Both a startling analysis and a charged polemic, Media Unlimited reveals the unending stream of manufactured images and sounds as a defining feature of our civilization and a perverse culmination of Western hopes for freedom.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Discover the history of Barnegat Light and journey through time with Author and Curator for the Barnegat Light Historical Society & Museum, Reilly Platten Sharp. At the mouth of Barnegat Inlet, Native Americans, whalers, pirates, fishermen, and revolutionaries once lazed, fished, fought, and died on Barnegat Light's sands before modern progress and big-city developers tried to build the next Atlantic City. Treacherous shoals just offshore claimed the lives of thousands of immigrants seeking new starts in America before the current lighthouse was designed in 1856 by the later victorious general of Gettysburg, George Meade. The Ashley House, one of the first shore resort hotels in the country, went up in 1821. In the 1880s, Benjamin Archer and William Bailey of Camden built bigger hotels, cottages, and roads in town, even bringing the railroad. Barnegat Light never became a bustling tourist town like her developers dreamed, but a close-knit community of fishermen, lifesavers and their families have endured for generations to call the still small town of Barnegat Light home. …

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Officially established in 1888, Collingswood was built on strong Christian values, as evidenced by its many houses of worship and its longstanding ban on serving or selling alcoholic beverages a policy still in effect today. The town s proximity to Camden and Philadelphia and a beautiful expansive park in the center of town helped to feed its early growth. In fact, at the beginning of the 20th century, town fathers proclaimed Collingswood the fastest growing community east of the Mississippi River. Collingswood chronicles the early development and remarkable growth up to the mid1900s of this southern New Jersey town through treasured images of the downtown district, church life, community affairs, government, streetscapes, Knight Park, and more.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. In the 18th century, Society Hill was home to wealthy merchants and many members of the federal government. In Old City, artisans and workmen lived and worked in small row houses like those on Elfrerth s Alley. As Philadelphia developed, it abandoned its Colonial center. Almost forgotten by 1900, Society Hill had become home to poor immigrants and its once gracious houses had become run-down tenements, shops, and warehouses. Yet, at the same time, Society Hill remained Philadelphia s banking and insurance center. Beginning in the 1960s, under the direction of city planner Edmund Bacon and the National Park Service, this neglected neighborhood was restored. Society Hill and Old City documents how these two neighborhoods looked in the early 1900s. The book s carefully researched narrative and vintage images tell the story of these historic neighborhoods. …

Paperback. Zustand: Good. A beautiful lake surrounded by virgin timber was enough for Dr. Hyacinthe P. Montborne to homestead here in 1884. He set up a shingle mill at Montborne in 1887, at the same time Hugh Walker was setting up a shingle mill in Walker Valley. With the establishment of the Seattle, Lake Shore & Eastern Railroad along the shoreline of Big Lake, the valley began to boom. The Day Lumber Company at Big Lake and the Nelson Neal Lumber Company at Montborne each established lumber mills. Their operations were far-reaching into the vast timberlands. With families homesteading near and far, the Finn Settlement, Ehrlich, Big Lake, Big Rock, and Baker Heights joined Walker Valley and the town of Montborne as communities. The mills are now gone, but the communities in the Big Lake Valley have survived, and generations of families, both old and new, continue to call it home.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. In 1632, after climbing up the face of a boulder near present-day Waltham and facing west toward Neipnett, Gov. John Winthrop sighted Wachusett Mountain rising against the setting sun. However, the idea of a town did not take hold until 1742, when the first settler, Joshua Wilder, arrived from Lancaster and established a tavern. By the mid-1800s, magnificent hotels and guesthouses dotted Princeton's landscape. Princeton and Wachusett Mountain shows the early days of tourism when visitors from Boston, New York, and Philadelphia rode stagecoaches to relax in the shade, play croquet on the common, and breathe country air. The village of East Princeton, meanwhile, flourished differently-chair factories used a fast-moving stream to run machines, and farmers worked the fields. Village life was simple and focused on family and the earth.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. In the heart of California's Central Valley, immigrants arrived in earnest on the heels of the Gold Rush, ranching and farming the land, including the Father of Manteca, Joshua Cowell, who traversed the Sierras on foot in 1863. Although the town was originally known as Cowell Station, the name Monteca (adapted from the Spanish word for butter) was proposed to distinguish the railroad stop and celebrate the dairy industry. The first tickets printed by the railroad labeled the town as Manteca--the Spanish word for lard. Manteca is known for one of the oldest landmarks in the county, East Union Cemetery (established in 1872); the family-owned and -operated Delicato Winery (established in 1924); and notable figures such as baseball great Milo Candini and Rep. John J. McFall. Today, Manteca boasts a population of 80,000; growth has been stimulated over the last 40 years by commuters who work in the Bay Area or Sacramento in exchange for life in a smaller community. This Family City is home to Big League Dreams, Bass Pro Shop, and the future Great Wolf Lodge, which will bring back waterslides to Manteca.…
