Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. The image of a Native American on horseback has become ingrained in the American consciousness. But the Plains Indians and the horse were not always inseparable. Once, Native Americans used dogs to help carry their goods, and even after the Spaniards introduced the horse to the Americas, horses were considered so valuable that the Spanish would not allow the Indians to have them. But soon horses escaped from Spanish settlements, and Native Americans quickly learned how valuable the horse could be as a hunting mount, beast of burden, and military steed. Follow the story of this transformative partnership, starting in the early sixteenth century and continuing today.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Although many books have been written about the Colorado gold rush, this one concentrates on assessing the cataclysmic changes that it brought to the Great Plains. In addition, rather than casting the story in the usual terms of heartless aggressors and hapless victims, it supplies a large and insightful interpretation that at once softens and increases our understanding of the Anglo disruption of Plains Indian cultures. The book's lucid writing and extensive research give meaning to the frontier concept that has been lambasted for 30 years or more. West's story is a story of cultural revisions - and thus the imaginations and aspirations of many people.…

Hardback. Zustand: Good. In this sweeping work of memoir and commentary, leading cultural critic Paul Chaat Smith illustrates with dry wit and brutal honesty the contradictions of life in ?the Indian business.? Raised in suburban Maryland and Oklahoma, Smith dove head first into the political radicalism of the 1970s, working with the American Indian Movement until it dissolved into dysfunction and infighting. Afterward he lived in New York, the city of choice for political exiles, and eventually arrived in Washington, D.C., at the newly minted National Museum of the American Indian (?a bad idea whose time has come?) as a curator. In his journey from fighting activist to federal employee, Smith tells us he has discovered at least two things: there is no one true representation of the American Indian experience, and even the best of intentions sometimes ends in catastrophe. Everything You Know about Indians Is Wrong is a highly entertaining and, at times, searing critique of the deeply disputed role of American Indians in the United States. In ?A Place Called Irony,? Smith whizzes through his early life, showing us the ironic pop culture signposts that marked this Native American?s coming of age in suburbia: ?We would order Chinese food and slap a favorite video into the machine-the Grammy Awards or a Reagan press conference-and argue about Cyndi Lauper or who should coach the Knicks.? In ?Lost in Translation,? Smith explores why American Indians are so often misunderstood and misrepresented in today?s media: ?We?re lousy television.? In ?Every Picture Tells a Story,? Smith remembers his Comanche grandfather as he muses on the images of American Indians as ?a half-remembered presence, both comforting and dangerous, lurking just below the surface.? Smith walks this tightrope between comforting and dangerous, offering unrepentant skepticism and, ultimately, empathy. ?This book is called Everything You Know about Indians Is Wrong, but it?s a book title, folks, not to be taken literally. Of course I don?t mean everything, just most things. And ?you? really means we, as in all of us..…

Paperback. Zustand: Fair. Of the early reports of the Bureau of Ethnology of the Smithsonian Institution, one of the most significant is Col. Garrick Mallery's report on the picture-writing of the American Indians. Except for a special section on petroglyphs (rock-writing), most of the examples are roughly contemporary with the writing of the report and were gathered by ethnologists, explorers, and expeditions to reservations. As such, the emphasis is on the meaning of the pictures, and the differences between the styles of picture-writing of the various tribes.Included are nearly 1,300 pictures and 54 plates illustrating the material which Col. Mallery narrates. Examples include: knotted cords, notched or marked sticks and wampum; mnemonic pictures for remembering songs, traditions, treaties, and accounts; the calendars (winter counts) of Lone-Dog and Battiste Good; maps, notices of visits, condition and warning; tribal designations, clan designations, tattoo marks (especially from the Haida); designations of authority, property, and personal names; religious symbols of the supernatural and of mythic animals; symbols used on charms and amulets, in religious ceremonies and in the burial of the dead; pictographs of cult associations, of daily events, and of games; historic records such as the Indian account of the Battle of Little Big Horn; records of migrations, hunts, and notable events; biographic records; significance of colors; picture-writing as it became conventionalized; and much more. There are also sections on interpretation of pictographs and on the detection of frauds, and comparative material from other cultures. For anthropologists, sociologists, historians, or artists, Col. Mallery's account is still the basic study of North American Indian picture-writing, Its wealth of pictorial material is not to be found anywhere else. And since most of the material was collected by contemporaries while picturing was still an important method of communication, the ethnologists were often assisted by the Indians themselves in decoding the pictographs and discovering the wealth of information that was conveyed by them.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. This study presents changes in the goals of US Federal Indian policy in the context of scientific thought during the late 19th century and early 20th centuries. The author argues that the policies on assimilation and citizenship were redefined between 1880 and 1920.

Paperback. Zustand: Good. More Native Americans lived in what is now the southern United States than in any other section of the country. The World of Southern Indians is a fascinating account of the South's first people. Virginia Pounds Brown and Laurella Owens' collaborative effort synthesizes much of the wide-ranging historical information on Southern Indian tribes. The authors have performed a vital service by bringing together information on Southern Indians from many sources and weaving it into a clear, readable story. Glick, Nathan H. (illustrator).…

Zustand: Very Good. When the first European explorers and settlers landed on the southeastern shores of North America, they encountered natives with the richest and most advanced levels of culture north of Mexico. Over time the descendants of these ancient peoples formed such famous nations as the Creek, Choctaw, Cherokee, and Seminole. The native population also included lesser-known tribes, among them the Timucuas, Quapaws, Catawbas, and the Chitimachas -- many of which are extinct today.Artist Peter F. Copeland documents the remarkable, and often tragic, history of these people in this carefully researched coloring book. Thirty-seven excellently rendered illustrations depict ancient burial platforms, the funeral of a Choctaw chief, Natchez warriors of 1758, Seminole women preparing a meal, Chickasaw warriors serving the Confederacy (1862), a modern Mikawuki Seminole alligator wrestler, and more.Of great interest to young students of Native American history, this excellently rendered volume will entertain and inform coloring book enthusiasts of all ages.…
