Mill, as librarian of the Royal Geographical Society, became involved with the preparations for Scott's Discovery expedition. At the request of Scott and Murray he accompanied the expedition as far as Madeira and during the journey he became very good friends with Shackleton. Lady Emily Shackleton approached Mill to write this biography within three months of Shackleton's death and Mill had her support throughout. The biography received widespread acclaim.
