Hier entstanden seine beruhmten Bilder mit paziergangern, Strandkorben und badenden Kindern. Der Band prasentiert die g…anze Vielfalt von Liebermanns kunstlerischem Schaffen am Meer. Von 1872 an reiste Liebermann jeden Sommer zu Studienaufenthalten nach Holland. Wahrend er sich zunachst mit dem Auge des naturalistischen Kunstlers dem einfachen Leben auf dem Land zuwandte, veranderte er unter dem Eindruck des franzosischen Impressionismus gegen Ende der 1890er Jahre seine Malerei und sein Verhaltnis zur hollandischen Landschaft. Aus der Marschlandschaft, die ihn bisher in seinen Bildern beschaftigt hatte, trat er heraus ans Meer und liess den Blick uber den Strand und die weite Wasserflache schweifen. Mit lockerem Strich und kraftigen Farben hielt er trandlandschaften fest, bald in grauer Ruhe, bald sonnig blau, bald wenn schwere Wogen brachen. Am Meer eroffnete sich Liebermann eine neue Motivwelt. Hier begann er, Impressionen des Lichtes in frischen Farben festzuhalten. Er gab die Eindrucke so unmittelbar wieder, dass schon die Zeitgenossen von seiner Malerei begeistert waren und meinten, die Seeluft formlich riechen zu konnen. Der Band versammelt Liebermanns Strandbilder und farbkraftigen Dunenlandschaften. Eindrucksvoll erschliesst sich dem Betrachter die Atmosphare der hollandischen Nordseekuste und die Faszination des Meeres. Meeres-Bilder von Zeitgenossen veranschaulichen die kunst-historische Stellung Liebermanns in der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Meer und zeigen seine impressionistische Meisterschaft.
