In den WarenkorbNo Binding. Zustand: Fine. This is a remarkable, original handwritten letter by Anne Adrien Armand Durantin (1818 to 1891), a notable 19th-century French playwright and novelist. Durantin is deeply woven into the cultural fabric of Paris, so much so that a street in the famous Montmartre district is named in his honor. While his career was purely rooted in the literary and theatrical arts rather than military pursuits, his historical significance is cemented by his high-profile collaborations. Most notably, he co-authored the 1866 hit play "Heloise Paranquet" alongside the legendary Alexandre Dumas fils, son of "The Three Musketeers" author. This specific letter is a beautifully humble and fascinating pitch addressed to the members of the "Societe des gens de lettres" (Society of Men of Letters). In it, a seemingly early-career Durantin self-deprecatingly asks the established literary giants to review his short story, "Fantomes au Champ des Morts de Stamboul" (Ghosts at the Field of the Dead of Stamboul). He brilliantly compares his unknown status to a "shadow" or an "ugly woman" needed to make their brilliance and beauty shine brighter by comparison. The letter is written from 20 rue de Vaugirard in Paris. As this was likely hand-delivered or enclosed within a larger packet to the Society, there are no postal marks or stamps present on the document. Full English Translation "To the members of the Society of Men of Letters. Gentlemen, If I were a famous name in the career of Dramatic literature, if my pen, or my pencil had placed me among those high reputations whose name assures the success of a work, you would have already received a letter from me, already I would have hastened to place my name and my work near your names and your works in the composition of a book similar to the Hundred and one. But I am still unknown in the career of letters and it is barely if I can claim a few literary feuilletons which most certainly have not reached you. Therefore, it is with great hesitation that I dare today to ask you to cast a glance at a short story that I am going to have delivered and to be willing to give it a place among your names so loved by the public. A shadow is needed in a painting so that the light stands out better; it is often necessary near a pretty woman to have a disagreeable face so that the latter gives more value to the former; If you permit it, Gentlemen, I will be the shadow, I will be the ugly woman and my Ghosts at the Field of the Dead of Stamboul will pass like light specters sheltered by your names. Please, Gentlemen, accept the assurance of my very distinguished consideration. Armand Durantin 20 rue de Vaugirard.". Signed by Author(s).…
