Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. These essays represent a forceful, relentless engagement with the political, social, economic, and theological pillars upon which South African apartheid rested. In the renewed struggles against global apartheid, Boesak's writings, in their theological grounding and with their social and political challenge, come across as alive, relevant, and powerful as they were in the struggle against South African apartheid, offering valuable insights and lessons for ongoing justice struggles today. These are groundbreaking essays. Allan Boesak not only courageously exposes the racism which has for so long disguised itself in Calvinist garb; he also respectfully points the way to a revitalizing reformed Christianity. Black and Reformed is a must-read for all who care about the continuing reformation of the church. --Richard J. Mouw, Former President, Fuller Seminary, Pasadena, CA When Allan Boesak returned Calvinism to its biblical and liberating roots, he launched a revolution that led to the dismantling and demise of South Africa's racist apartheid theology. --Curtiss Paul DeYoung, Executive Director, Community Renewal Society, Chicago, IL Black and Reformed is the only treatise that lucidly reasons that one can be Calvinistic while embracing liberation theology. --J. Alfred Smith Sr., Professor Emeritus, American Baptist Seminary of the West, Berkeley, CA Allan A. Boesak received his PhD in Theology from the Protestant Theological University (Netherlands) in 1976, the same year of the Soweto Uprisings which marks his entry into public life in South Africa. As President of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches he called for the formation of the United Democratic Front to advance the anti-apartheid movement in 1983. He has written seventeen books and has received numerous awards, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Award. He now holds the Desmond Tutu Chair for Peace, Global Justice and Reconciliation Studies at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Cotton Mather is probably best known for his contributions to the Puritanism of colonial America. Yet the subject of this book is Mather's theology of Christian experience, usually associated with continental Pietism, a dynamic movement of reform and renewal in the Lutheran church. Richard Lovelace summarizes the basic thrust of Mather's treatment of spiritual rebirth, sanctification, pastoral and social ministry, the need for spiritual awakening, and the effects he believed this awakening should produce in Christianity and the mission of the church. In Mather, the two great strains of American Evangelical Protestantism--Puritanism and Pietism--were combined, influencing Jonathan Edwards and American religion in general throughout the Great Awakening and subsequent revivals. Thus, the book is unique in tracing the roots of modern Evangelicalism beyond nineteenth-century Arminianism to the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century blend of Puritant-Pietist thought. Professor Lovelace has made an invaluable contribution to our understanding of Puritanism and Pietism in his very thoughtful and insightful book. - Sydney E. Ahlstrom, Yale University . . . the first book in our time to do justice to Mather as a latter-day Puritan and shaper of American religion. - J. I. Packer, Regent College Richard F. Lovelace is Professor Emeritus at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Massachusetts.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. From their theological and devotional writings to their social and ecclesial practices, the fathers and mothers of Pietism boldly declared the ethical spirit of the Christian faith. This seventeenth-century renewal movement inspired a simple Christian ethic by connecting Christian character with the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love. They sought to cultivate these virtues by reading Scripture together, empowering the common priesthood of believers, and engaging in social and ecclesial reform toward the end of spreading the gospel. Pietism brought together faith and life, Word and deed, and piety and social reform in effort to get back to the basic belief in the power of God's Word to engender faith and to transform human life. This book celebrates Pietism's contribution by telling the stories of three early figures--Philipp Jakob Spener, Johanna Eleonora Petersen, and August Hermann Francke--as they attended to issues of class, gender, poverty, and education through the lens of scripture. In addition to clarifying what historians call one of the least understood movements in the history of Christianity, this book challenges a religious culture that juxtaposes faith and social action, and it rehabilitates the Pietist heritage and its central role in the birth of Evangelicalism.…
