Hardback. Malcolm Gillies, Boydell & Brewer Ltd. Percy Grainger (1882-1961) was a pianist, composer, ethnographer, essayist, and much more. The Australian-American musician aspired to the condition of a polymath, with strong interests in language, culture, ecology and technology. In an age of increasing specialisation Grainger held to a breathless all-roundedness. This book looks at the scrabbling diversity of Grainger's life through the eyes of others. Family and friends, pupils, musical associates and chance acquaintances recall their experiences of Percy Grainger from his boyhood in colonial Australia, through his conservatorium years in Germany, on to his early professional years in London, and further to the zenith of his career and then years of decline in the United States. In the final chapter, Grainger himself explains the driving passions of his life. Fifty illustrations, including architectural drawings, scores and machine plans, vividly depict the enthusiasms described in over ninety recollections of Grainger. A composer of over four hundred compositions and virtuoso performer in some three thousand concerts, Grainger left a large legacy. He was an important influence upon the folk-song movement in Britain, and, through such masterworks as Lincolnshire Posy, he was enduringly popular with the band movement in America. On a personal level, his development of the language of 'blue-eyed English' was stillborn, and his muscular style of pianism found few adherents among the next generation of performers. His frankly expressed views on sexual licence were also many decades ahead of their time. Today, however, Grainger the musician is again in the ascendant. His more innovative works are gaining a belated hearing, while his standards, such as Country Gardens, remain firm favorites. Malcolm Gillies and David Pear are co-editors of Grainger on Music and 'The All-Round Man': Selected Letters of Percy Grainger, 1914-1961. Hardback.

George Percy Grainger (1882-1961) is well known for his work in collecting folk music and experimentation with early electronic instruments; the inscription is singularly apposite. It reads in full: 'To dear Harry, in warm admiration of his true genius, thanking him for his glorious first performance of "The Lost Lady", & in happy memory of one of the few electric concerts of my life (June 2). His friend, Percy, June 1938'. The musical sentiment that follows comprises the first three bars of 'The Lost Lady Found', the sixth movement of Grainger's 'Lincolnshire Posy', a collection of folk songs arranged for concert band. The 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' notes that 'In the latter part of his life, Grainger's surplus energy and time were directed into two large-scale projects: the completion and arrangement of his museum in Melbourne [opened in 1938], and his White Plains-based experiments in what he called "free music". In pursuit of the imagined sound of his free music, a music unconstrained by fixed pitch, regular metre and human performance, he built mechanical music machines which combine the makeshift and the futuristic'. The gelatin silver photograph (an impressive 330 × 250 mm) is signed and dated by the photographer Frederick Morse ('Morse 1937', written in ink on the bottom right-hand corner of the image). 'After World War 1, Frederick Morse, a young professional photographer, built a house next door to Percy and Rose Grainger in White Plains, New York. He produced many of Grainger's promotional photographs during the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s as well as informally documenting the Grainger household and Percy's eclectic pursuits. Their association became close, with Morse periodically working as Percy's secretary and as an occasional wrestling partner' (Brian Allison, 'Grainger Photographs', University of Melbourne Library Journal, 2000). The photograph has a little silvering-out to the lower right-hand portion, and its edges are a little darkened with a few trifling chips; overall it is in excellent condition. The recipient is Harry Seitz, supervisor of music and conductor of the choir at the New Central School, Detroit, Michigan. The concert on 2 June 1938 was in the Orchestral Hall of the school. (Many thanks to Barry Peter Ould, President Emeritus, The Percy Grainger Society, for this invaluable information; the event is listed in his database of Grainger concerts from 1894-1960). Signed by Author(s).
