Some soiling to endpapers; erased pencil signature upon front pastedown; three-line ink ownership inscription for Birmingham, Alabama engineer George Wallace Postell on front free endpaper; laid-in at front endpapers are two blank sheets of U.S. Army Air Forces stationery personalized for one Horace E. Barnhouse. A very good copy. B/w photographs throughout plus several pages of b/w cartoon illustrations. Unfortunately not a pilot trainee classbook but rather a souvenir pictorial record of daily life and routine circa 1943 at Columbus Army Air Field. Base commander Colonel L.C. Mallory and staff officers are shown in b/w portrait photos but otherwise personnel are mostly shown in group photos attending to base duties. Page 63 features five group photos showing members of the 65th Aviation Squadron, a segregated unit comprised of African Americans save for its commanding officer Major C.B. McCoy (pictured separately in a sixth photo on same page). Now known as Columbus Air Force Base, the Columbus, Mississippi Army Air Field continues operating as one of the primary flight instruction schools for the U.S. Air Force hosting the 14th Flying Training Wing of the Air Education and Training Command. {MilHistShelf #1}.…

Photograph. Zustand: Good. Contemporary print. Sheet is approximately 8 inches by 10.5 inches. Black and white photographic image is approximately 9 inches by 6.5 inches. This is printed on photographic paper stock. The image is of a Pilot/Astronaut in a flight suit/spacesuit, seated on a chair. Based on comparison with NASA early photographs of the Mercury 7 Astronauts, this appears to be an astronaut in their spacesuit. It may be Gordon Cooper in the picture. The photo is contemporary with Project Mercury. Project Mercury was the first human spaceflight program of the United States, running from 1958 through 1963. An early highlight of the Space Race, its goal was to put a man into Earth orbit and return him safely, ideally before the Soviet Union. Taken over from the US Air Force by the newly created civilian space agency NASA, it conducted twenty uncrewed developmental flights (some using animals), and six successful flights by astronauts. The program took its name from Roman mythology. The astronauts were collectively known as the "Mercury Seven", and each spacecraft was given a name ending with a "7" by its pilot. On April 9, 1959, NASA's first administrator, Dr. Keith Glennan, announced the names of the agency's first group of astronauts at a news conference in Washington, D.C. Now known as the "Original Seven," they included three Naval aviators, M. Scott Carpenter, Walter M. Schirra Jr., and Alan B. Shepard Jr.; three Air Force pilots, L. Gordon Cooper Jr., Virgil I. (Gus) Grissom, and Donald K. (Deke) Slayton; along with Marine Corps aviator John H. Glenn Jr. This group photo of the original Mercury astronauts was taken in June 1963 at the Manned Spacecraft Center (MSC), now Johnson Space Center, in Houston, Texas. The astronauts are, left-to-right: Cooper, Schirra, Shepard, Grissom, Glenn, Slayton and Carpenter. Project Mercury became NASA's first major undertaking. The objectives of the program were to place a human-rated spacecraft into orbit around Earth, observe the astronaut's performance in such conditions and safely recover the astronaut and the spacecraft. The Mercury flights proved that humans could live and work in space, and paved the way for the Gemini and Apollo programs as well as for all further human spaceflight. …

Innumerable b/w photographs of base personnel, officers, several pilot training classes (ATU or Advanced Training Unit), etc. Laid-in between pages [8-9] is a b/w photograph (dated for January 1949 on verso) of presume pilot standing next to his plane which appears to be a TBF Avenger. Publisher's imprint on rear flyleaf verso with Army and Navy Publishing Company order form laid-in between rear fly and rfep. OCLC locates what is likely a single matching copy (bibliographic details a bit scant) at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. The [U.S.] Naval History and Heritage Command-Navy Department Library cites two only two copies of NAAS Kingsville cruise books for 1954 and 1958 in their collection.…
