Octavo, turquoise boards (hardcover), gilt letters, 431 pp. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: On 16th October 1939, the first enemy aircraft to be shot down over Britain in World War II fell to the Spitfires of 602 (City of Glasgow) and 603 (City of Edinburgh( Auxiliary Squadrons. These were the first fruits borne of an idea embodied in the Air Force Constitution Act, 1917, and developed in Sir Hugh Trenchard's Memorandum of December 1919. Twenty-One Squadrons is the first history of the pre-war Auxiliary Air Force and Special Reserve and the post-war Royal Auxiliary Air Force Squadrons, and it sets out the full story of the magnificent contributions by the 'weekend' squadrons in all operational commands of the RAF and in most theatres of war, from Europe to Burma. The off-duty histories of these unique squadrons are not forgotten either -- for they have a special place also in the memories of these volunteer flyers. Ever since the Royal Auxiliary Air Force Squadrons were sadly disbanded in 1957, Leslie Hunt has been working on Twenty-One Squadrons, gathering information and hundreds of photographs from all over the world. Best-known for his famous book Veteran and Vintage Aircraft, he served alongside 602 and 604 Squadrons and flew in 605 and 608 Squadron aircraft in World War II. Ex-members of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force and indeed all aviation enthusiasts and historians will be grateful for Leslie Hunt's detailed yet evocative history. Aviation, Military History, British History, Royal Air Force, RAF. yslic.
