Hardcovers have green half-cloth binding with light green paper-covered boards and paper spine labels with dark green lettering. Spare spine label tipped in at rear of each volume. Decorative endpapers. All edges deckle. All volumes have tissued frontispiece, 27 of them photogravures of drawings by R. H. Sauter. Printed on paper made with a circular watermark of JG monogram. Vol. 1 has tipped in pamphlet: "John Galsworthy: a Sketch of His Life and Works". Charles Scribner's Sons, 1922. A few vols. Have small scratches on covers, a bumped corner or two, or small dents on cover edges. Some vols. Have a small nick or chip on cover edge, spots on the spine, small stains on the covers, or a stain on the label. Vols. 15-22 & 30 have some pages that are uncut. V. 3: Last two pages have a tanned rectangle where a newspaper clipping was once stored. "Fold-out chart in rear contains the Forsyte Family Tree and was prepared by the author". V. 10: a frayed corner. V. 14: Short horizontal ridge in center of spine. V. 15: Small stain on top page edges. V. 23: Binding lightly cracked between pages 8 & 9. v. 30: Part of spine label is missing; no words affected. Overall, bindings tight. Hinges NOT cracked, except for front hinge of v.16 which is starting to crack at 3 small spots. Corners and spine ends very lightly bumped. Covers have light surface and edge wear. Pages very lightly and uniformly tanned but still supple. Pages clean and unmarked. No dust jackets. Details available upon request. All five volumes are from J.M. DentÕs Popular Edition of John Galsworthy titles and were GalsworthyÕs personal copies which were used as setting copies for the printer. The books included are (1) Tatterdemalion, which John Galsworthy intended to separate the short stories and scatter them in different volumes of the limited signed edition by writing a full page: ÒNote for printers: The stories in this volume are revised for the various volumes to which that are attached for the Limited Collected Edition. See index pages sent. Notes will be attached to the volumes dealing with the original dedications. J. G.Ó with significant deletions, annotations and corrections in ink by Galsworthy throughout the book; (2) Five Tales - with a significant number of ink corrections and deletions in his hand. At the end of the final tale, ÒIndian Summer of a ForsytheÕ Galsworthy has changed the title and he has written to the printer: ÒThe last in the volume ÔFive TalesÕ will be ÒA FeudÕ.in place of Indian Summer of a ForsytheÓ Transferred to The Forsythe Saga Vol: II.Ó (3) The Man of Property - Popular Edition 1921 with John GalsworthyÕs bookplate illustrated and designed by R.H.
