Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 63 pages. Published in 1995. The artist/photographer's second collection. Her very first title with Aperture Foundation. Limited Edition of 2000 copies. The first and only edition. The Limited Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Katy Homans: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with black titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Lynn Stern. All of the "Dispossession" Suite plates are delicately and beautifully tipped-in on the page. Supplementary photographs from her "Whiteness" Series are interspersed with Donald Kuspit's brilliant essay, "The Vulnerable Core". Tritone separations by Robert J. Hennessey. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Lynn Stern's "Dispossession". One of the finest post-Surrealist photographic meditations on life, mortality, and death. "While initially shocking, her skull and deathmask images are mysteriously inviting due to their luminosity and Stern's powerful identification with her subject. Spectacularly produced, a profound and intellectually rigorous work, a hauntingly beautiful meditation on mortality" (Aperture Foundation). The collection visualizes one of the earliest-known and most profound philosophical reflections (aptly quoted in the book) : "When we are alive, our souls are dead and buried in us. But when we die, our souls come to life again and live" (Heraclitus). An absolute "must-have" title for Lynn Stern collectors. This title is a late-modern art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. 12 tipped-in tritone plates, 23 supplementary plates. One of the most brilliant American artist/photographers of our time. A fine copy. ISBN 0893816264. no.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Used - Very Good. Bruce Davidson's photographs of Central park reveal a haven of breathtaking beauty and ecological secrets, as well as a site for wondrous adventures. Renowned as an intrepid explorer of the urban terrain, and a member of Magnum Photos, Bruce Davidson has challenged himself in a remarkable new way, by taking on the visual and metaphorical scope of Central Park. Always compassionate, often idiosyncratic, this work reveals a sublime and at times transcendent vision. Davidson seems as comfortable with a wedding, a landscape, or a roller skater as he does with Central Park's more permanent residents, a newborn bird or a man seeking refuge on a cold winter's night. Davidson has intuitively discovered a multiplicity of mysteries, eccentricities, and characters that together reflect the vibrant and complex city of which the park is the heart and soul. At the same time, Bruce Davidson's Central Park becomes a metaphor for a larger human experience. With text by author, journalist, and translator Marie Winn, a preface by writer and former Central Park Conservancy director Elizabeth Barlow Rogers, and Davidson's own anecdotal reflections, 'Central Park' provides an expansive view of this wonderfully intricate and varied space. Renowned as an intrepid explorer of the urban terrain, Magnum photographer Bruce Davidson has taken on a project of unparalleled visual and metaphorical scope in Central Park, revealing a humane, democratic haven of breathtaking beauty and ecological secrets--a site for wondrous adventures. 60 photos. Traveling exhibition. wrapped in complimentary Brodart dust jacket protector. Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Used - Very Good. In his first body of work, Living Room, British photographer Nick Waplington found the chaotic, multidirectional, often joyous choreography in the everyday lives of two working-class families living in council houses in Nottingham. In Other Edens, his global series of panoramic images, Waplington imposes his body as a physical and metaphorical presence in the landscape. The omnipresent artist - head shaven, and naked so as to deny the possibility of locating him in time - appears in evocative scenes ranging from Naples to Easter Island, from the Peace Park in Hiroshima to the swamps of the Louisiana Bayou. The book's text, by renowned author Marianne Wiggins, includes an interview with Waplington about his extraordinary working methods and the far-flung locations he has chosen to photograph. Invoking the spirits of Friedrich Nietzsche, Eugene lonesco, and Peter Pan, Wiggins provides a brisk and insightful counterpoint to Waplington's exceptional imagery. In this series of panoramic images, British photographer Nick Waplington imposes his body as a physical and metaphysical presence in the landscape. The omnipresent artist--appearing in scenes ranging from Naples to Easter Island--integrates personal, cultural, and comic visions to present an idiosyncratic view of a planet in flux. 50 color photos. SIGNED by photographer Nick Waplington.…

Davidson "To Claude Bruce Davidson 1995". - "Working in New York City's Central Park over four years, Bruce Davidson made images of the vibrant life and activities that take place in the well-loved green space. The Magnum photographer and New York resident captured youthful play, rendezvous-ing couples, and citydwellers at rest in the park. He also became acquainted with a variety of eccentric characters - his reflections of meeting these individuals, taken from his book Central Park, are republished below. His notes are prefaced by a text by Elizabeth Barlow Rogers on the richness of Davidson's work made in the famed space. Elizabeth Barlow Rogers is a landscape designer, preservationist and writer, founder of the Central Park Conservancy, and President of the Foundation for Landscape Studies." In den WarenkorbMint in publishers cloth in like dustjacket (still shrink wrapped). 120pp. Illustrated throughout. 1st edition. 4to. From Italy, France, Spain, Greece, Macedonia, Turkey, Tunisia, Syria, and Jordan, Jodice's luminous photographs evoke a vision of Mediterranean civilization that is a conflation of history and mythology. His dramatic yet ethereal images refuse both classical and contemporary boundaries in a fusion of the topographical and the intimate. Ruined temples, lost cities, heroic landscapes, gods and goddesses, vistas of Vesuvius and of the omnipresent sea transcend the constraints of their historical context in terms of both time and space. At the same time, Mimmo Jodice's artful darkroom interventions give these images a renewed energy, one that is born of the present material world, but which seems sustained by loftier, more elusive mysteries. He begins with black-and-white negatives, and then works in the darkroom to create the simultaneous presence of a multiplicity of tones. Jodice's treatment of the photographic paper gives the images a suggestion of movement - they vibrate with the sense, as he puts it, that "everything is fleeting and somewhat impregnable."Jodice's deeply original work reveals not only an experimental creative process, but also an informed and unique vision addressing a subject matter - archaeology - that has never before been considered in this way. His particular interpretations of such Classical icons remind us of the continuing impact of the Mediterranean world on our present lives, and reinstill a sense of epic, of adventure, of wonder, and even of providence - all so often missing in contemporary culture. Jodice provides us with a vision of the Mediterranean that is rich and vast, letting symbolic images become links between the experience of diverse peoples, and between ourselves and our distant ancestors. Originalhalbleinen; Umschlag. Zustand: Gut. 127 S.; sehr zahlr. Illustr.; 26 cm. Gutes Ex.; Umschl. etwas berieben. - Englisch. . // They called themselves the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, but because of their ecstatic dancing, the world called them Shakers. The Shakers were celibate, they did not marry or bear children, yet they are the most enduring religious experiment in American history. Seventy-five years before the emancipation of the slaves, and 150 years before women began voting in America, the Shakers were practicing social, economic, and spiritual equality for all members. They believed in pacifism and feminism, freedom from prejudice, natural health and hygiene, and joyful personal worship. At their height in 1840, more than 6,000 believers lived in nineteen communal villages from New England to Ohio and Kentucky. Tales of their peaceful and prosperous lives impressed the world's Utopians. But Shaker aspirations were divine, not social or material. As millennialists, they were unified in the belief that Christ had come again, first in the person of Mother Ann, their founder, and subsequently "in all in whom the Christ consciousness awakens. " It was therefore the duty of each believer to live purely "in the kingdom of heaven on earth," and to strive for perfection in everything they did. Today, fewer than a dozen Shakers still live in two two- hundred year old villages in New Hampshire and Maine. Although their numbers have dwindled, their importance has not, and the longing to understand these mysterious people is greater than ever. For two hundred years, the Shakers have put their hands to work and their hearts to God. In their buildings, their furniture, their stone walls, in the turn of a wooden peg, the Shakers' striving for simplicity and perfection is plainly stated.
