L'Imam Al-Maziri a vécu à une époque de tro…ubles marquée par la dislocation de la dynastie sanhajite et l'extension des luttes fratricides entre sunnites et chiites. A l'instar des autres faqihs maghrébins, il a toujours préféré au recueil de hadiths rapportés par Bukhari celui de Muslim, plus conforme à ses méthodes d'enseignement. Ce commentaire, établi à l initialtive de Beït al-Hikma par le grand savant tunisien M.C. Enneïfar, est le premier qui ait jamais été consacré au recueil de hadiths rapportés par Muslim. Al-Maziri ne l'a pas expressément écrit : assistant à une lecture de ce recueil, pendant le mois de Ramadan 499/1104, il l a commenté oralement. Ses disciples se sont empressés, sous sa dictée, de prendre des notes aussi fidèles que possible, qu'ils lui ont ensuite soumis. Il a relu ces notes et y a apporté quelques corrections. C'est là l'origine du présent ouvrage. Al-Maziri s y révèle comme un ashaarite, un faqih et un lexicographe. Ashaarite, il l'est dans sa défense de la ligne sunnite d'Al-Ashaari et de ses disciples. Ses adversaires mu'-tazilites, de tendance rationaliste, ne sont pas, pour autant, malmenés. Faqih, il l'est par sa perpétuelle quête de l'ijtihad dans ses fatwas, où il semble très souvent soucieux de l'intérêt de la communauté musulmane, surtout pendant les périodes troublées de luttes fratricides. 3. Lexicographe enfin, dans sa connaissance intime des ouvrages écrits en la matière à son époque et même avant. Il a pu ainsi expliquer les hadiths demeurés obscurs, à cause de certains vocables inusités employés par le Prophète.
