Later authorities have echoed his judgement, calling Christina Rossetti the finest woman poet of the nineteenth century. There are no less than eleven of her poems in the New Oxford Book of English Verse, and her poem In the bleak mid-winter has, in its setting by Gustav Holst, become one of the best loved and most popular of English carols, known to thousands who have never heard of the Rossetti family or the Pre-Raphaelite movement. But in her brilliantly perceptive biography Mrs Battiscombe convinces us that the sadness characteristic of her poetry has causes deeper than any external troubles. In early adolescence Christina had a spiritual and emotional crisis from which she emerged transformed. It is only possible to guess at the causes of this crisis. 'The tension between two nationalities, two cultures, two ways of thought can be very fruitful of results,' writes the author, 'though it will inevitably be the cause of much stress and suffering to the person concerned. From this tension genius can be born.'In this book a tragic story unwinds against a background of life in an immensely gifted and closely-knit family, and it is a story of unflagging interest and moving pathos." Slightly agetoned, otherwise Good.…
