Uniformly bound in full leather with decorative gilt covers front and back, each with an armorial seal, raised bands on gilt decorated spines, inner dentelles, all edges gilt, ribbon markers, with all covers still attached, frontis-piece in Volume I is present [foxed]. There are two bookplates inside each volume, each with a history attached to the owners. The first is E. Dennison, being Eduardo Denison. There is a Latin inscription to him in Volume I "Egregio Juveni Eduardo Denison Coll: Oriel: Supt. Ord. Commensali, Publica Examinatione In Litenis humaniovibus Primam Clafsem Adepts. D. D. Praepositus et Socii Osielenses. MDCCCXXII". It appears that this set was a gift for passing an exam of importance. In 1868 Argentina, Eduardo Denison, along with Octavia Hill, created Labor Centers, Worker's Clubs and Schools to help free those in poverty, banishing the systems of handouts in favor of work. He also worked with UNESCO, analyzing the influence of Education in the economic growth of a country. The second bookplate, being armorial, bears the name of W. Harry Rylands (1847-1922) a prolific author, Secretary to the Society of Biblical Archaeology, specializing in Oriental Archaeology and the Hittite Language. He also designed a fount of Hittite type, with this just touching upon his extensive activities in the fields of literature and antiquities. Covers show edge/corner wear, some upper spine weakness due to the books being improperly pulled from shelves, interior shows occasional light foxing.

Small, faint, monastic ink stamps to top edge of title and blank fly-leaf. A beautiful copy overall, quite scarce in any condition.

All have contemporary handwritten notations on the front pastedown, in a spidery hand. Calf is nice, extremely smooth. Text is good, with no foxing, and all bindings are internally sound. Drama. Two volumes bound in one, 8vo, pp. viii, 215, [1]; [5], 220-464; a very good copy, slightly browned at foot, but uncut in the original blue paper boards, with white paper spine (spine possibly later), with ink MS title label, upper joint cracked but otherwise sound. First edition of this important collection of Shakespeare source material, edited and published by John Nichols, at the suggestion of the scholar George Steevens. The earlier plays were something of a revelation to many contemporary readers, and, as George Colman the elder comments in his review of the volumes, 'The perusal of these old plays will rather serve to raise than to depreciate his genius in the estimation of his readers, and will shew that the delicacy of his taste and the soundness of his judgment, were almost as remarkable as the richness of his fancy' (Monthly Review, October 1779). Two volumes bound in one, engraved portrait frontispiece (by Cook) and pp. viii, lxiv, 120, [2] advertisements; [iii]-x, 271; without the half title to volume II; foxing in the text at beginning of volume II, and some light staining at end; contemporary calf, slightly chipped at extremities of spine. First London collected edition of Goldsmith's poems and plays. There was another edition printed in 1780, 'for B. Newbery and T. Johnson', but these booksellers seem to be a plausible fiction and never existed: their edition, listed by Williams on pp. 171-2, is likely to be a pirated version of this one. This edition, by contrast, opens with what is clearly an official dedication to Sir Joshua Reynolds, by the bookseller Thomas Evans, dated 1 January 1780. This copy has some early MS notes on I p. xxxviii and II p. [viii]: the second of these suggests that The Good-Natur'd Man is largely copied from a French play titled Le Complaisant.
