Zustand: New. (Hardcover, 1989). (1889) 1989 Centenary Edition. 8vo (165 x 241mm). Pp224. Plain plates, illustrations. Brown cloth, spine titled in gilt. Only 1500 copies printed. Slightly used and tanned but very good in dust-wrapper, without slip-case. New preface by Dermot Wilson. This is a Centenary Edition of what is widely regarded as being the greatest work on the subject of flyfishing published in the twentieth century. History has not always been kind to Mr Halford, indeed there have been periods during the last one hundred years when his name and his work have been denigrated, and his reputation has been associated with an excessive purism and a narrow dogma, thought to be the product of snobbishness and an exclusive cult. These ideas have little relation to Halford's actual words or his achievement. Though he was unaware of the potential of nymph fishing in chalk streams, he nonetheless was an all-round fisherman of considerable intuition and experience, and a tireless experimenter always in search of improvements, whether in flies or tackle. On the river Test in Hampshire, where so much of his pursuit of trout and grayling took place, Halford is still remembered with proper respect. His name is also revered from New York to Tokyo among the devotees of the Dry Fly. Apart from its historical value, this book is still very well worth a perusal by fly fishermen of the southern chalk streams. It is also a model of clear expression, brilliant organisation, lucid prose, and, above all, remarkable thoroughness, so typical of the pioneers of the Victorian Age. .

(Hardcover, 1989). (1953) 1989 3rd edition. 8vo (145 x 223mm). Ppviii,295. Line illustrations by the authors. Black boards, spine titled in gilt. Owner's inscription else very good in spine-faded dust-wrapper. An exchange of letters between Richard Walker and Maurice Ingham. Primarily concerning carp fishing, with much on the Carp Catchers' Club, but with a great deal also on other aspects of angling such as fly-tying, rod building, fly casting, net construction etc. "Nowadays, carp weighing upwards of 20lb or more are caught so often that the modern angler may think that fish of the size Maurice and I were catching in 1950 small fry. Remember that in those days, fewer than a dozen carp over 10lb in weight were caught in an average season in the whole of Britain. The deliberate pursuit of big fish, now regarded as a commonplace branch of angling, was then almost unheard of; Maurice and I were groping our way out of the dark." (Richard Walker). An enduring classic and one of the key books in any coarse angling library. .
