The map measures 7.5 inches by 5.25 inches approx…., noticeable browning to the reserve side else in nice condition. The initials F.R.S.F.L.S. after Audubon s name stand for Fellow, Royal Society; Fellow, Linnean Society. They were the two top natural history societies in England at that time. ----EDITIONS: Audubon s Birds of America from Original Drawings by John James Audubon, was a huge, double elephant folio-size work comprised of 435 hand-colored engravings in four volumes, printed in England during the years 1827-1838. The plate size was about 29 x 39 . Following the success of his large folio edition Audubon offered a miniature or Royal Octavo Edition which was lithographed and hand-colored in Philadelphia during 1839-44 by John T. Bowen. Unlike the folio edition described above this was issued with text and was considerably smaller. The part number shown at the upper left refers to the group of five issued at one time, making a total of 500 prints. Subsequent editions of the smaller (octavo) size, also called The Birds of America from Drawings Made in the United States and its Territories, were published from 1856 (this was after Audubon's death in 1851) to about 1871. They were printed in color rather than hand-colored. These are often called Second Editions regardless of when published (1856, 1859, 1860, 1861, 1865, and 1870-71). ----CONDITION: Lightly toned; upper margin chipped at corners, but image in very good condition. ----PA029.

It is a large bird, approximately 40 inches long with a 38-inch wingspan. The work contains four important maps and a series of 10 beautiful color plates depicting views along the route after original drawings by Gustav Sohon.This is a first class report to read and the maps are most helpful in tracing journeys of others. The colored plates add to the interest - Streeter.Captain John Mullan parlayed the topographical expertise he gained while assisting Isaac I. Stevens on the first transcontinental North Pacific Railroad survey (1853-55) into a monumental, years-long endeavor to carve the first engineered overland route across the northern Rockies - the 624-mile military road linking Fort Walla Walla (Washington Territory) with Fort Benton on the Missouri. Working intermittently from 1859 to 1862 amid tribal diplomacy, brutal winters, floods, and a chronically thin budget, Mullan drove axemen, graders, and bridge builders through the Bitterroot and Coeur d Alene ranges to create a wagon corridor that accelerated migration and military logistics in what would become Washington, Idaho, and Montana. His excellent Report on the Construction of a Military Road from Fort Walla Walla to Fort Benton (Washington, 1863) distills the enterprise with a highly readable text coupled with handsome color lithograph plates of regional scenery along the Missouri River, Coeur d'Alene Mission in the Rocky Mountains, various encampments, and natural beauty of the region. Carl I. Wheat devotes 10 pages to his discussion the Mullan Report, going into some detail about the four maps.
