Soft cover. Zustand: Good. First edition. 8vo. 24pp. In modern wraps. Title and final leaf soiled and stained. P. 11-12 with a two-inch tear to top margin, affecting text but without loss. Final leaf with a one-inch tear at blank inner margin. In good condition. A sermon calling for repentance and an end to the war. "It is a matter of fact that we are now engaged in war, that we have lost many thousands of our countrymen by the sword, that the battle is come nearer to us and our enemies are greatly multiplied, till it is become a mighty host that cometh against us? and that this nation is a wicked and an adulterous nation a nation abounding with those very vices which as God tells us in his word brought down his judgment upon other people such as adultery swearing drunkenness defrauding gambling Sabbath breaking lying and slandering." 1779 of course was a terrible year for Britain. The American Revolutionary war was favoring Washington's armies, France was engaged in bloody naval wars with Brits and Spain had just declared war on Britain. A scarce pamphlet. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. HAVELL Daniel after HASELER H. (illustrator). 1st Edition. With Lord Gwydir's Summer Cottage! Internally, folding coloured frontis, additional engraved title page with coloured print, [5], (viii) only, [1], 2-100, [2] pp. Complete with twenty-two hand-coloured aquatints (including folding panoramic frontispiece of Sidmouth and coloured vignette on engraved title page). Engraved map of Sidmouth on penultimate page with touring directions below. Illustrations by Daniel Havell; after H. Haseler. Contemporary half red morocco over marbled boards, expertly rebacked using original spine. Smooth spine partitioned by gilt rules and with gilt decorations between, gilt spine lettering, marbled endpapers, Some rubbing to boards. Overall, a very good copy; very clean and fresh. There are two issues of this book with the latter having two more views and no text. Page 100 is devoted to a description of 'Additional Buildings &c.' that, at the time of printing, were being completed in or near Sidmouth. Two of the buildings mentioned in this section later had plates illustrative of them. "Copies with the extra views also discard the letterpress title and text, the book appearing in album form only. It will also be noted that the present copy carries a leaf giving the name of the 'first fifty subscribers', and it is possible that the early state was limited to a number but little in excess of fifty" (Abbey). This copy has the subscriber list. Probably the next owner of Woodlands was Peter Burrell, Lord Gwydir, who purchased the old house in about 1806 and immediately set about altering it into the most picturesque thatched cottage ornée, spending a great deal of money in the process. Historically, the Gwydir estates lay in County Caernavon. Lord Gwydir's estate was Langley Park, Beckenham, Kent, and 'Woodland Cottage', as he renamed the house, was his seaside retreat. Part of the cottage was pulled down and a new west front was built overlooking the garden allowing a suite of reception rooms to be formed, all of which were decorated in fashionable Regency style. Lord Gwydir was also responsible for the lovely barrel ceilings found in the Dining Room and rooms 11, 14 and 15. He put in a new staircase - one of the best in the district - with a spacious landing. All the windows were changed and many fashionable 'Gothic' headed casements were installed; some still have the original coloured glass. Regency craftsmen replaced the inner doors and mouldings. He was so keen to oversee the work and improvements himself that he rented a house in Fortfield Terrace (built 1790-94) for the duration of the work. The building he created was mentioned in many books on Regency times. As a result of family connections he moved in the highest social circles and was a friend of the Prince Regent, 'Woodland Cottage' was visited by many of his society friends. The garden was a particularly picturesque feature, and much commented upon. There was a loggia along the north side supported by pillared oak trunks and roofed with rustic branches with the bark left on, these were planted with roses and honeysuckle which twined up, the whole terminating in a little room of similar design all surrounded by orchards. As with many great houses of the time, when Lord Gwydir was not in residence visitors were admitted to view the house and gardens. 22 hand coloured aquatints. Abbey Scenery 307. Prideaux p329. Only 1 copy located by OCLC.

No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. John Wallis (Ludgate Street No. 16), London, 1785. Engraving. A large broadside ballad, a one-page piece of sheet music measuring 10.25 x 13.5 inches (about 26 x.33.4 cm.). The song is a seven-stanza ditty about a prank played on two London men - both of them blind - busking for coins near Bedlam (Bethlehem Royal Hospital). Publisher John Wallis was one of the foremost London printers of board games in the late 18th century. He was also known for maps, playing cards, broadsides and satirical prints. Very good condition with wrinkles, an old horizontal fold, creases at head, some general soiling. Free of tears or chips.

Hardcover. Zustand: Poor. No Jacket. An Essay on the Natural Equality of Men; on the Rights that Result From It, and on the Duties Which It Imposes. To Which a Silver Medal Was Adjudged by the Teylerian Society at Haarlem, April 1792, Corrected and Enlarged, By William Lawrence Brown, D.D., The Second American Edition, Printed and Published by John Wallis, Newark, 1802, 141 pp plus contents, full original leather, 6.75 x 4.5", 18mo. In as-is condition. Binding copy. Both board detached and quite worn. Desiccated surface with numerous defects to leather. Ex-library of the Mechanic's Library Association of Lancaster, PA. Old hand ownership of M. Dickson beneath library plate. Front flyleaf detached from binding. End papers soiled with age-staining and brittle edges. Text is relatively bright with minor toning. A few instances of staining. Free of known markings. Binding remains intact. Please see photos. A very interesting work. Brown argues that equality based not on talent or virtue, but on obligation and "mutual dependence." He gives no credit to the idea of evoulutionary self-transformation, but he is optimistic that man is qualified for endless improvements in knowledge and virtue, and the happiness which he attains will exactly correspond to the degrees of his progress. ***** FORN0756 HKVAR1223.

A handsome copy in full contemporary mottled calf, gilt ruled borders, spine decorated with gilt flower heads, black morocco label; v.g. Armorial bookplate of the Duke of Bedford. Thomas Wilson dedicated this work to Samuel Johnson who presented him with a copy of his Lives of the Poets. In the second edition of 1793 Wilson included Johnson's reply, which was also printed in Boswell's Life: 'The esteem and wiseness of kind and good men is one of the last pleasures which I can be content to lose; and gratitude to those from whom this pleasure is received, is a duty of which I hope never to be reproached with the final neglect'.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. London, John Wallis, 24 December 1794. Overall dimensions 520 × 663 mm (dissected into 16 panels and mounted on linen), comprising a hand-coloured map (engraved by McIntyre, printed surface 380 × 530 mm), with extensive letterpress text on either side. Paper slightly tanned, with a few small marks (including some inkspots), creases, tiny chips and scattered light foxing; top right-hand corner trimmed close, with the text lightly shaved; cloth a little foxed and discoloured on the verso; overall in very good condition. An attractive Georgian board game, with the winner being the first player to reach London. The letterpress gives rules for playing the game and details of the history and manufactures of the 117 towns mentioned. It is not necessarily accurate; for instance, Henry VI, not Henry IV, was captured at Northampton by the Yorkists. We have traced several reissues of the game, using the same plate but with some variation to the letterpress, and this error appears in several of them. A spinner ('Totum') and counters were available for separate purchase, and are not present in this instance.
