Hardback. Zustand: Good. William Again (1953) by Richmal Crompton. George Newnes Limited. No ISBN. Condition: Good. There are fictional children who exist solely to teach valuable life lessons, tidy their bedrooms without complaint and say things like, "Mother, I have reflected upon my behaviour." William Brown is not one of them. William Brown is the reason those fictional children needed to exist in the first place. By the time William Again appeared in 1953, Richmal Crompton?s gloriously irrepressible schoolboy had already been wreaking cheerful havoc for over thirty years. Yet somehow William had managed the literary trick of remaining permanently eleven years old while generations of his readers grew up, found jobs, paid taxes and occasionally discovered, to their horror, that they now sympathised with William?s long-suffering parents. This collection finds William exactly where he belongs: armed with absolute confidence, only the vaguest understanding of consequences, and a remarkable ability to convert the simplest afternoon into an administrative nightmare for every responsible adult within half a mile. William never intends to cause chaos. He simply has very unusual ideas about what constitutes a good idea. Whether reforming local society, helping deserving friends, organising ambitious schemes or attempting to improve matters generally, William approaches every situation with unwavering optimism and catastrophic judgment. The beauty of Richmal Crompton?s writing is that William is never malicious. He genuinely believes he is making life better. It is merely unfortunate that reality consistently refuses to cooperate. The stories remain astonishingly fresh because Crompton understood children far better than most adults ever manage. William isn?t an angel, nor is he a miniature villain. He is impulsive, imaginative, occasionally infuriating and endlessly entertaining. Every adult remembers knowing a William. Quite a few secretly remember being William. And then there are the adults. Poor Mr and Mrs Brown, eternally attempting to maintain some semblance of order while events spiral steadily beyond their control. Teachers, neighbours, policemen and respectable members of society all fare little better. Crompton had an exquisite ear for middle-class English respectability and took obvious delight in watching William accidentally dismantle it one well-intentioned scheme at a time. Unlike so many children?s books that quietly fade into the fashions of their era, the William stories have endured because they are fundamentally about human nature. Children remain inventive. Adults remain optimistic that this time things will be different. They rarely are. This 1953 George Newnes edition also carries the unmistakable charm of mid-century publishing. The sturdy red cloth binding, complete with its small illustration of William peering confidently from the lower corner, feels wonderfully understated. It belongs to an age when publishers assumed the contents would provide the excitement and the cover merely needed to get safely from bookshelf to bedside. This copy is in good condition . It has clearly survived several decades with commendable dignity and remains a handsome example of a classic William edition?ready for another generation to discover that childhood mischief was flourishing long before computer games, smartphones or social media offered entirely new ways of alarming one?s parents. From Crappy Old Books ?because William Brown has achieved something most fictional characters never manage. He has remained permanently young while his readers have quietly become the adults he used to torment. It is one of literature?s finest practical jokes. Read these stories today and you?ll probably laugh twice: once at William?s latest magnificent disaster, and once at the uncomfortable realisation that you no longer identify with William at all. You?re now worrying about the carpet, the neighbours, and whether anyone remembered to lock the garden gate. William, naturally, hasn?t. …
