Paperback. , . Author: Tim Fischer Format: Paperback Number of Pages: 264 Written by former Deputy Prime Minister, The Honourable Tim Fischer, Steam Australia paints a fascinating picture of Australian steam transportation over ten vital decades of transformation; from two world wars, to changes in leadership and even a visit from the Queen, the century of steam locomotion in Australia is also of great political interest. Fischer tracks key steam locomotives that traversed Australia during critical stages of our nation's development and transported soldiers to fields of conflict as we fought in two world wars. For a century, from 1850 to 1950, steam locomotive haulage dominated Australia's various rail systems. During that period, rail networks expanded from a few short routes in the big capital cities to huge networks reaching every corner of each state. The book covers the great named express trains hauled by steam locomotives over the decades: Puffing Billy, Robert Gordon Menzies, The Ghan. Special features include information on Albury's 'break of gauge' platform (where two state track systems met), the Amiens branch line (running through Pozieres and Passchendaele stations in Queensland), the 'garnishee' order against the Spirit of Progress, some important characters such as C. Y. O'Connor and many more fascinating topics. Tim Fischer's story of steam trains in Australia is illustrated with over 300 exciting images from the superb National Library John Buckland collection of photography, many never seen before. John Gould's Extinct and Endangered Mammals of Australia is a prominent 2014 book written by contemporary Australian zoologist and policy developer Dr Fred Ford. Published by the National Library of Australia, the book focuses on 46 native mammal species that have either become extinct or are highly threatened since they were originally documented by British naturalist John Gould in the mid-19th century. The Core Concept: The book serves as a historical and ecological bridge. It contrasts the relatively untouched Australian wilderness that John Gould experienced in the late 1830s with the stark realities of environmental decline today. The Baseline Text: Between 1845 and 1863, John Gould published his landmark three-volume work, The Mammals of Australia, featuring 182 stunning, hand-coloured lithographic plates. The Modern Lens: Fred Ford takes 46 of those species to tell a broader story about colonization, changing landscapes, and conservation. Historical Witness: Ironically, while Gould warned of the impending decline of Australian fauna due to unregulated hunting and habitat alteration, his collectors killed thousands of specimens to create his artistic inventories. Features in Each Species Entry:The book organizes each animal's profile into an "opener spread" designed for comprehensive historical tracking: Original Artwork: Features the lavish color plates illustrated by H.C. Richter and Elizabeth Gould from the 1863 publication. At a Glance Summaries: Brief overviews detailing scientific nomenclature and current EPBC conservation classifications. Distribution Maps: Comparison maps tracking the animal's former historical range versus its current distribution, including reintroduction zones. Timeline of Decline: Chronological tracking of the species' history post-European colonisation, highlighting the introduction of feral pests (like foxes and cats), land clearing, and early colonial attitudes. Notable Species Highlighted: The book covers several iconic and tragic cases of Australian wildlife loss: The Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger): Wiped out on the mainland thousands of years ago, the last known specimen famously died in captivity at Hobart Zoo in 1936. Pig-footed Bandicoot: A delicate desert-dwelling marsupial that vanished entirely by the mid-20th century. Desert Rat-Kangaroo: A small marsupial perfectly adapted to drought variations that succumbed to introduced predators by 1935.Surviving Species: The text also includes vulnerable mammals fighting for survival through modern ecological programs, such as the Numbat, Koala, and Common Wombat.…
