Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. In the first part, the authors introduce the progress of researches on nitrogen metabolism of soybean nodules and roots. They investigate the fate of nitrogen fixed in soybean nodules by tracer experiment with 15N2 gas. The results indicate that major part of fixed N in bacteroids (a symbiotic state of rhizobia) is excreted rapidly to cytosol of infected cells in the form of ammonia, then the ammonia is assimilated into amino acids via GS/GOGAT pathway. Then the fixed nitrogen is assimilated into ureides, allantoin and allantoic acid, and then transported to the shoots via xylem. A small portion of fixed N was assimilated in the bacteroids directly into glutamate and alanine. On the other hand, nitrate absorbed from the roots are mainly assimilated into asparagine. The characteristics of nitrate absorption and metabolism was studied. It is well known that nitrate is a potent inhibitor to nodulation and nitrogen fixation, although the inhibitory mechanism is not fully understood. The authors recently found that nitrate depresses individual nodule growth and nitrogen fixation activity rapidly and reversibly when nodules were in direct contact with nitrate. The indirect effects of nitrate on nodule growth and nitrogen fixation activity were different among treatment concentration and period of supply. The continuous supply of low levels of nitrate from the lower part of roots promoted the nodulation and nitrogen fixation of the upper part of the roots. Hypernodulation mutant lines of soybean were isolated which have profuse nodulation compared with parents. They also exhibit partial-nitrate tolerant to nodulation. The characteristics of hypernodulation mutant lines were studied in relation to nitrate inhibition. The results suggest that lower nitrate absorption and assimilation activity in hypernodulation mutants may be one reason to milder inhibition by nitrate on hypernodulation mutant lines. Introduces the progress of researches on nitrogen metabolism of soybean nodules and roots. This title investigates the fate of nitrogen fixed in soybean nodules by tracer experiment with 15N2 gas. It studies the characteristics of nitrate absorption and metabolism, as well as of hypernodulation mutant lines in relation to nitrate inhibition. Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. At the request of the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance, the U.S. International Trade Commission undertook an investigation to better understand the role of digital trade--domestic commerce and international trade conducted via the Internet -- in the U.S. and global economies, as well as the effects of barriers and impediments to digital trade that impede U.S. access to global markets. This book shows that digital trade contributes to economic output by improving productivity and reducing trade costs. Digital trade also contributes to the economy as a whole as it facilitates communication, expedites business transactions, improves access to information, and improves market opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. This book contains seven chapters that detail the future of smart cities. Chapter One focuses mainly on the practical barriers encountered by the author during the design and implementation of three Smart City projects as a project management consultants (PMC) team leader. Chapter Two argues for a greater focus on enabling and enhancing the growth of third places within smart city(ies), through closer business to municipal government collaboration to ensure that these human aspects are taken into consideration by urban planners. Chapter Three argues that current technocentric approach(es) to smart city(ies) design and implementation may create unforeseen negative externalities arising from inequitable access to the promises of digitisation. Chapter Four discusses current developments and future research trends in smart technology(ies) within urban environment(s). Chapter Five includes insights from a robust literature review about inclusive transformation and an empirical study on inclusiveness in 21 smart cities in India along with a deeper qualitative study of Nagpur smart city. Chapter Six establishes that the formation and development of City Smart potential depends on a number of conditions and factors, which the authors divide into external and internal ones. Lastly, Chapter Seven provides a generalization of existing approaches to the definition of design and determinants of the smart awareness development among the youth of Ukraine, and describes the current state of perception of the Smart City Concept. Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. Schizophrenia: Triggers and Treatments is a series of texts that introduces the reader to some of the more recent advances in schizophrenia research. It is concerned with questioning the role of the immune system in the aetiology and course of the disorder, as well as investigating the efficacy of some of the available treatments for schizophrenia. Edited by a leading scholar in the field, and written by researchers at the cutting edge of these developments, each chapter provides details of original works and their theoretical and empirical impact. The theme of cognition is prevalent throughout the book. As a core deficit in schizophrenia, cognition proves to be fundamental to both the mechanisms underlying the disorder, and the treatments used to alleviate symptomatology. It is evident in all subpopulations of schizophrenia patients explored in this collection - from those with early onset schizophrenia, to those being treated in forensic mental health services - and its importance throughout the lifespan of individuals with schizophrenia is highlighted. With a focus on a practical understanding of schizophrenia, this book will be of value to all researchers, psychiatrists and therapists with a clinical or research interest in this subject. ABOUT THIS BOOK: The research projects presented in this book are the most recent studies of intelligence. They will improve our understanding of the human's ability to learn, understand or deal with new or trying situations and how people apply knowledge to manipulate one's environment or to think abstractly as measured by objective criteria (as tests). Understanding intelligence is important because it improves our understanding of how the brain works and could potentially be a gateway to improving education on all levels from individual teaching methods to widely used curriculums.(Publisher).

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Grace and self-control. Anyone who has been on the inside of my sporting effort know for the most part those words do not exist. They may accidentally present themselves on occasion, but for the most part, when humans and physical challenges come together in the same arena, everything but grace and self-control results. It seems the harder we strive for perfection the more our human side takes control, bringing with it blunders, mishaps and confusions. The martial arts is by no means an exception. This book is commemoration to this effort by way of a collection of light-hearted cartoons honouring the attempts by human beings living to imitate the ways of nature. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Migraine has evolved into a giant puzzle and its literature comprises a vast loosely-linked enterprise challenging human problem-solving capacity. There is no central idea in migraine to elaborate a general theory which in turn could ultimately lead to creation of a unifying hypothesis that collects the various strands of evidences into a coherent and logically defensible intelligible synthesis. Current pathogenetic concepts of migraine, in particular cortical spreading depression (CSD), do not focus on the precise onset of the attack. Neither the aura nor the headache represents the true beginning of a migraine attack. The primary or causal physiological alteration underlying migraine lies in the 'pre-prodromal' phase, the variable interim between exposure to the headache-provoking stimulus or situation and the onset of the migraine prodrome. The migraine prodrome itself can last several hours to a few days. Since CSD is believed to underlie both the migrainous scintillating scotoma as well as the headache, it cannot be regarded as an early or initial 'pre-prodromal' physiological event. The biology of migraine is not the study of laboratory 'markers' but the elucidation of physiological forces (trait and/or state factors) that push (precipitate) or pull (predispose) patients towards aura/headache or aura/headache-free state. The pathophysiology of migraine has been hitherto confined to analyses of diverse precipitating and remitting factors and uncertain postulations about recorded laboratory aberrations into presumptive causal algorithms. The key cranial physiological system involved in migraine remains unidentified. Migraine attacks occur during stress and, more commonly, after cessation of stress. The author has earlier proposed that a physiological neuroendocrine 'system' comprised of well-regulated parallel activation of the vasopressinergic, intrinsic brain serotonergic, and intrinsic brain noradrenergic systems constitutes an important adaptive mechanism that governs vascular integrity, antinociception, behaviour and overall function during stressful occasions, including migraine attacks.Such a conceptual template can be used to segregate the vast phenomenology of migraine into primary pathogenetic or secondary non-pathogenetic divisions; non-pathogenetic migrainous phenomena can be further subdivided into adaptive and concomitant (epiphenomenal) physiological events. Nausea and/or vomiting, facial pallor, Raynaud's phenomenon, episodic daytime sleepiness, and relative hypotension (both spontaneous as well as induced by prophylactic anti-migraine pharmacologic agents) likely reflect the non-pathogenetic (adaptive or epiphenomenal) clinical components of migraine. The pathophysiological basis of aura/headache and nausea/vomiting of migraine is very unlikely to be identical. Exogenous magnesium does not readily cross the intact blood-brain barrier and decreases the permeability of the blood-brain barrier. Magnesium depletion appears to serve an important adaptive function; its utility in migraine management is not convincing.Magnesium depletion, platelet activation, peripheral alterations in serotonin and catecholamine metabolism, hyper-responsiveness of brain noradrenergic, serotonergic, vasopressinergic, and dopaminergic systems, parasympathetic nevous system activation, pupillary miosis, and cutaneous allodynia probably represent some of the secondary adaptive physiological mechanisms operative in migraine. A critical or central role for brain neuronal involvement in migraine pathogenesis appears unikely as established migraine preventive agents like atenolol, nadolol, and verapamil do not readily cross the intact blood-brain barrier or influence brain neuronal function. Antidepressants, including amitriptyline, induce brain noradrenergic and serotonergic hyperfunction, rendering highly unlikely that such brain Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. The Bush Administration has pursued several avenues to attempt to contain or end the potential threat posed by Iran, at times pursuing limited engagement, and at other times leaning toward pursuing efforts to change Iran's regime. Some experts believe a potential crisis is looming over Iran's nuclear program because the Bush Administration is sceptical that efforts by several European allies to prevent a nuclear breakout by Iran will succeed, although the Administration announced steps in March 2005 to support those talks. U.S. concerns have been heightened by the victory of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, an admitted hardliner, in Iran's presidential election on June 24, 2005. Some advocate military action against Iran's nuclear infrastructure, but others believe that a combination of diplomatic and economic rewards and punishment are the only viable options on the nuclear issue. U.S. sanctions currently in effect ban or strictly limit U.S. trade, aid, and investment in Iran and penalise foreign firms that invest in Iran's energy sector, but unilateral U.S. sanctions do not appear to have materially slowed Iran's WMD programs to date. Other major U.S. concerns include Iran's policy in the Near East region, particularly Iran's material support to groups that use violence against the U.S.-led Middle East peace process, including Hizballah in Lebanon and the Palestinian groups Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Some senior Al Qaeda activists are in Iran as well, although Iran claims they are "in custody" and will be tried. Iran did not obstruct the U.S. effort to oust Iraq's Saddam Hussein, a long-time Tehran adversary, at least partly in the expectation that pro-Iranian Shiite Islamic factions would come to power in Iraq in the aftermath. That result occurred as a product of 30 January 2005 elections there. Iran is also assisting pro-Iranian local leaders in Afghanistan, although that support does not appear to be materially hindering the stabilisation and development of Afghanistan. Iran's human rights practices and strict limits on democracy have been consistently criticised by official U.S. and U.N. reports, particularly for Iran's suppression of political dissidents and religious and ethnic minorities. New limits on personal freedoms could be imposed by Ahmadinejad, who has consistently advocated a return to many of the original principles of the Islamic revolution as set down by the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. However, Iran does hold elections for some positions, including that of president, suggesting to some experts that there might be benefits to engaging Iranian officials. According to this view, new sanctions or military action could harden Iran's positions without necessarily easing the potential threat posed by Iran. The Bush Administration has pursued several avenues to attempt to contain or end the potential threat posed by Iran, at times pursuing limited engagement, and at other times leaning toward pursuing efforts to change Iran's regime. One important feature of "Branding in Commerce and Marketing" is the fresh look at branding architecture (i.e.: alternative brand naming strategies, along with proposals for making brand structuring and interpretation more coherent). This book dissects some vexing conceptual and even semantic issues surrounding the venerable word "brand" itself and explores the usefulness of the conception of branding. However, there was found to be too little support for those undergoing and becoming addicted to CS, and whose health is affected as a result. For example, frequent treatments and chemical products place stress on the eye and are closely related to a person's health in general. In addition, eyebrow beauty treatments are commonly available in Hong Kong salons and elsewhere. Recently, artificial fingernails have become very popular in Hong Kong. This book examines popular beauty products, trends and the effects that the beauty industry has on public health. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. This book presents research on the subject of early arithmetic conducted in a Swedish compulsory school. The research is based on the epistemology of radical constructivism and the methodology "multiple interviews" and "the process of supervision". The problem was investigated by comparing children's early arithmetical knowledge-building in the compulsory school (CS), in CS's remedial teaching (REM) and in the school for intellectually disabled (SID). In an intervention study, twenty children of various ages in SID and REM participated, as well as their teachers. The aim was to adjust the teaching content to harmonize with the children's ways of operating and longitudinally investigate the children's progress, as well as to facilitate teachers' model-building of their children's various ways of operating and needs for learning. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Most large urban centres lie in coastal regions, which are home to about 25% of the world's population. The current coastal urban population of 200 million is projected to almost double in the next 20 to 30 years. This expanding human presence has dramatically changed the coastal natural environment. To meet the growing demand for more housing and other land uses, land has been reclaimed from the sea in coastal areas in many countries, including China, Britain, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United States. Coastal areas are often the ultimate discharge zones of regional ground water flow systems. The direct impact of land reclamation on coastal engineering, environment and marine ecology is well recognised and widely studied. However, it has not been well recognised that reclamation may change the regional groundwater regime, including groundwater level, interface between seawater and fresh groundwater, and submarine groundwater discharge to the coast. This book first reviews the state of the art of the recent studies on the impact of coastal land reclamation on ground water level and the seawater interface.Steady-state analytical solutions based on Dupuit and Ghyben-Herzberg assumptions have been derived to describe the modification of water level and movement of the interface between fresh groundwater and saltwater in coastal hillside or island situations. These solutions show that land reclamation increases water level in the original aquifer and pushes the saltwater interface to move towards the sea. In the island situation, the water divide moves towards the reclaimed side, and ground water discharge to the sea on both sides of the island increases. After reclamation, the water resource is increased because both recharge and the size of aquifer are increased. This book then derives new analytical solutions to estimate groundwater travel time before and after reclamation. Hypothetical examples are used to examine the changes of groundwater travel time in response to land reclamation. After reclamation, groundwater flow in the original aquifer tends to be slower and the travel time of the groundwater from any position in the original aquifer to the sea becomes longer for the situation of coastal hillside. For the situation of an island, the water will flow faster on the unreclaimed side, but more slowly on the reclaimed side. The impact of reclamation on groundwater travel time on the reclaimed side is much more significant than that on the unreclaimed side. The degree of the modifications of the groundwater travel time mainly depends on the scale of land reclamation and the hydraulic conductivity of the fill materials. Reviews the studies on the impact of coastal land reclamation on ground water level and the seawater interface. This book derives various analytical solutions to estimate groundwater travel time before and after reclamation. It uses hypothetical examples to examine the changes of groundwater travel time in response to land reclamation. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Objectives: This book examined the decision making process and health seeking patterns of low-income young women with unplanned pregnancies who opted for abortion, putting baby up for adoption, or keeping the baby. Methods: Research methodology in this book focused on formative research utilising qualitative data. The study was conducted covering all five shelters and low-income communities in Bangkok, Thailand. The data collection was through Focus Group Discussions, and in-depth interview. Forty-five cases were purposively recruited into the study. The data were analysed using content analysis. Results: From the qualitative research, the results indicated that the majority of the young women tended to select abortion as their first choice, while a few cases continued their pregnancies to term without any attempt to terminate the pregnancy. These women tended to delay seeking assistance once they found out their pregnancy situation. Majority of the low-income young women were more likely to resort self-medication as their first alternative, which was sometimes hazardous to their health.Decision on self-medication or abortions with unskilled personnel sometimes resulted in serious and life-threatening complications. Many pregnancy-termination situations resulted from self-medication. While most of these women made the important decision themselves, they still sought advice, guidance, and support from their partners, peers and parents. When the first attempt failed, they would seek a second or third attempt until they felt it was not possible to achieve what they had planned. Most women with unplanned pregnancies knew that they had options regarding termination of their pregnancies but their main concern was confidentiality. Consequently, the women who wanted to terminate their pregnancies adopted three patterns of action, i.e., 1) visiting drugstores / grocery stores, 2) visiting private clinics or hospitals, and 3) using physical pressure or vigorous actions. Most of the women realised that private clinics provided effective methods for terminating pregnancy, but due to its high cost, they would first resort self-medication or self-management. If they were not successful, they would then visit a private clinic and asked others to support the cost.Understanding the women's decisions making process and their health seeking patterns utilisation allows us to understand their decision and course of actions. The program managers, implementers, providers, partners, parents/relatives, and friends should do as much as possible to support the decision of the women in order to provide better information and services to reduce the impact, both physical and mental, of their selected choice. Examines the decision making process and health seeking patterns of low-income young women with unplanned pregnancies who opted for abortion, putting baby up for adoption, or keeping the baby. This study was conducted covering all five shelters and low-income communities in Bangkok, Thailand. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
