Softcover. Zustand: Very Good+. First Edition. This copy inscribed and signed by the author "Chris Carrell". 333, [1] pages. Page dimensions: 231 x 150mm. A novel, set in New Zealand. "Rose McLeod survived the Napier earthquake, navigated her way through University in wartime Wellington and fell in love with a soldier about to embark for Egypt and Italy. Life on his return offers a new start on an Otago sheep farm where Robert's family welcomes her with relief and hope for their future. But it's a tough environment, hampered by poverty, traditional methods and lack of support. Despite their shared efforts, the arrival of children, and a developing sense of belonging, it is not enough. Conflict arises through sharing a home with her in-laws, over farm inheritance, through economic pressures and even within the church over the Geering trial. Rose wants to break out of the confines of what is expected of a farmer's wife. Although her own children are well-versed in the adaptability, resilience and self-reliance of rural people, Rose is challenged to understand her offspring who face difficult decisions in a world massively different from her own childhood.".

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Limited Edition. No. 73 of 125 copies on white laid Buckeye Text paper in Intertype Baskerville and Regal type for private distribution. x, 34pp; 8vo; brown cloth lettered in pink. Nice frontispiece "We Fought Bears with Bulls" reproduced from a linoleum block cut by Louie Romiti. The beginning of the Nugget Press was in 1939 with its first publication, a translation from the German, of Heinrich Lienhard's "I Knew Sutter." This, the third publication of the press continues the tradition of having some student group write, print, bind, and copyright at least one book each year. The result is this beautifully produced little volume, with both the original Spanish and facing English. According to the forward, Enrique Cerruti was employed by H. H. Bancroft as a history hunter, who faithfully recorded this narrative of Spanish California seen through the eyes of the Californianos.

The story is taken from the German reminiscences of Heinrich Lienhard, who associated with and worked for Captain Sutter between 1846 and 1849. The translation was done by students of the German 4 class. The Modern Literature 8 class carefully edited the translation and read proof. Students in the Art Department drew and cut the linoleum frontispiece of Captain Sutter. The printing students set the entire book by hand, ran off the forms, and hand-sewed and bound the books. C. K. McClatchy Senior High School is happy to present you with this copy of I Knew Sutter." Back colophon: "Of This Edition 285 Copies Have Been Printed and Bound For Private Distribution, This Copy is No. 200." Issued in celebration of the hundredth anniversary of Sutter's founding of his settlement "New Helvetia" which became the city of Sacramento. This book contains a translation of Chapter Ten from Heinrich Lienhard's "Californien unmittelbar" which was first published in 1898. The chapter is concerned with John Sutter and his fort. In the back of the volume is a listing of all the students who assisted in the production of the book.
